Feedback
Situated in Tavistock, this once-charming inn has experienced a worrying decline. Patrons lament the absence of warmth and welcoming service since previous owners departed. Complaints about uncleanliness and cold atmospheres abound, alongside disappointing food and drink offerings. Recently, guests have faced shut doors without warning, leaving them to scramble for accommodations. While some visitors praise the current owner's friendliness and the unique decor, many are left yearning for the days of friendly locals and a cozy atmosphere. This establishment's future remains uncertain, as disheartened regulars seek refuge in more reliable venues nearby.
We stopped by looking for a place to stay for the night and were greeted by Jenny and her partner. They were welcoming and showed us a few different rooms to choose from. We decided on their recently renovated king size room, which was impeccably clean, had a cozy bed, and a great shower. The rest of the pub was also very clean. For breakfast, we enjoyed a traditional full English meal that was freshly cooked to order. We would definitely stay there again.
The new managers have done a fantastic job considering the restaurant's past. When we arrived, the place was in terrible condition as the previous tenants had taken everything they could. The pub's current Facebook page is now called The New Tavistock Inn. Despite facing some resistance from locals, the new managers are determined to make the restaurant successful.
It's amazing how much things have changed. We have visited this restaurant a few times this year and it used to be a charming, welcoming place with friendly locals and a great atmosphere. However, since Keith and Alison have left, it's not the same. When we arrived, it was dark and cold, there was a mess that no one seemed to care about, and the bartender was on his phone and didn't even acknowledge us. There were no locals present and the atmosphere was lacking. The selection of real ales was limited and honestly, the one we tried was terrible. We definitely won't be returning.
Do not ask for tea or coffee. After two rounds of drinks in as family group of 4 we asked politely for a hot drink only to be lectured on where you could get one in Tavistock-23 place’s apparently. This was after innocently engaging the landlord in discussion on beer choices and his pub Millwall paraphernalia only to receive condescending smart ass comments. We are regular visitors to Tavistock and will be surprised to see this owner still in business next year. Next stop, Wetherspoons. Welcoming, inexpensive and endless tea and coffee.
This Inn has very good reviews so after a days cycling, we decided to stay here. The room was comfortable and large. However. When we were showed into the room we were told that there was going to be live music in the bar below. We were not told this, and would not have booked. The music went on till 11:20 pm and then noise out in the street below till 12:30 am so not a quiet place to stay on a Friday night. The bedlinen and towels also smelt of cigarette smoke which is not good when you do not smoke.
