While some reviewers found the food to be just okay, others praised the authentic Greek cuisine and exceptional service. With a variety of dishes to choose from, reasonable prices, and a welcoming ambiance, Diethnes seems to be a popular choice for those seeking a taste of Greece in Sydney.
The restaurant itself feels a bit dungeon-like being underground. Foodwise I prefer the Athenian to eat in or the Corinthian Marrickville for takeaways, but this is close to home & their takeaways are OK when I want to tuck into yemista or moussaka in front of the TV. Very small takeaway servings though, so only if I'm really craving it...
Really great food. However the service was a little odd - maybe a bit overfriendly. And very noisy with families on a Saturday night. But the food was worth it.
Hailing from Melbourne, my partner (who grew up on the cooking of his 'Yiayia') and I have pretty high expectations when it comes to Greek Cuisine. Luckily, Diethnes did not disappoint! We ordered a selection of dishes to share, including Saganaki, Spanakopita, Tiropita, Dolmades, Tzatzkiki and Panfried Calamari. The food came out quickly, which was much appreciated as we had a flight to catch that evening - yet at the same time the dishes were well spaced out (as opposed to all sent out at once, which can sometimes be a lot to deal with space-wise). As for the food itself, it was authentic, fresh and full of flavour. Highlights included the melt-in-your-mouth Spanakopita and well-balanced, full-flavoured Tzatziki. An utterly divine meal. To top it off, the service was great - our waiter was friendly and attentive, despite the busy turn-out. We will 100% be back here the next time we're in Sydney!
This was my first time trying Greek food and I thought everything tasted pretty good. It was just the whole underground feel that I didn't like so much.
When I worked near Central I lunched here often, after moving uptown I still strolled down for its atmosphere and good reliable food; this all stopped though with the new interior: bench seat against the wall. Not on. Felt like a dining hall in a barracks.
