Zen Restaurant has long been a cherished spot for locals, known for its warm atmosphere and flavorful dishes. While some patrons feel the quality has waned over the years, others consistently rave about the fresh sushi, tender sashimi, and crispy tempura. Newcomers delight in the beautifully presented bento boxes and unique offerings like takoyaki and green tea tiramisu. Despite occasional service hiccups, with issues like rushed courses or understaffing, many appreciate the friendly staff and cozy environment. Overall, Zen remains a beloved neighborhood dining option, perfect for casual meals and special occasions alike.
This restaurant is amazing! The portions are generous, the service is attentive and friendly, and the variety of sake options is extensive. It made for a memorable evening.
The restaurant has delicious food and a unique Japanese-inspired decor. However, they may need to improve their presentation in order to attract a different type of customer.
It is always busy here, the produce is always nice and fresh yet tasty and full of joy to eat. the service is great and pleasant everytime I come.
Came by weeks ago with a group of friends. The ambience was nice and cosy. The service was friendly. Food took a while to come out, and they missed one of the components of one of our orders. They were very apologetic and gave an extra portion. I had the kaiseki bento. The sushi and sashimi were fresh. The takoyaki balls were among the best I've had in a long time. The chicken teriyaki was well flavoured and the meat was tender. The tempura were lightly battered and the salad added a nice refreshing crunch to the meal. The miso was pretty standard. The meal also came with choice of ice cream. I had the sesame which was really fragrant and delicious.
I having passed Zen so many times I’m so glad I finally made the trip in to try the food! The owner was there to serve me and advised that a lot of their customers had said it was one the best tempura in Melbourne so I was super excited to find that it was absolutely delicious!! I’m not a tempura expert but it was definitely the best I’ve had in Melbourne! Crunchy and keeping the integrity of the ingredients perfectly cooked! Will 100% be back
