Flower Drum - Melbourne
Flower Drum
Description
The consensus on the iconic Melbourne restaurant Flower Drum seems to be mixed. Some diners have praised the exceptional service and delicious food, particularly highlighting dishes such as the Peking duck and chef's signatures banquet. However, others have been less impressed, with complaints about bland and unimpressive dishes, small portions, and high prices. While the restaurant's reputation as a pioneer of fine dining in Melbourne is commendable, some feel that it may have become outdated and lacking in modern dining experiences. Overall, Flower Drum seems to offer a reliable and enjoyable dining experience for those looking for high-quality Chinese food and excellent service, even if it may not meet everyone's expectations.

Feedback
We opted for the five-course meal, and the duck and scallops were exceptional. However, the other courses were just satisfactory. The service left much to be desired; our waiter seemed more focused on pressuring us for a tip than providing a pleasant dining experience. He also appeared more interested in an adjacent table with an attractive woman. Flower Drum seems to be relying on its past reputation, but it could really use a refresh.
Don't go if you are hungry. Amazing service, but only quite good food in very small portions.
While the Peking Duck pancakes and san choi bao were acceptable, neither offered the excitement one would expect from a fine dining experience; they were just average. Unfortunately, the crispy chicken fell short as well—it was bland, lacking flavor, and the skin wasn’t even crispy. Overall, Flower Drum could greatly benefit from a refresh in decor, menu, and food quality. Sadly, I won’t be returning, as I feel it wasn't worth the price.
