Reviews praise Monteiths' steaks, seafood and warm atmosphere but note occasional slow or inconsistent service, compact seating and dim lighting.
The haggis starter was superb and my venison was so tender. My partner’s salted cod was excellent. Next time the cauliflower though. Beware of a crazy lady setting fire to drinks menus! Sorry!
0 Please avoid this place we had a voucher to use and the girl could not find voucher reference. She left my sister waiting for ages until we had to phone my nephew who had gifted us for Xmas treat. We were made feel as if we had free meal and people were looking at us. Humiliating . Terrible service and meal mediocre not worth the money . Prices expensive for what you get please don’t go here . It will only waste your day !
Bartender and hostess were nasty. I walked in at 5:25 and asked if I had a drink at the bar, could I get a dinner table for 1 at around 5:45? Hostess said no problem. At 5:45 I asked the bartender, who heard my conversation with the hostess, if my table was ready? She said it would be 6:30. I told her no my table is supposed to be ready. She said I failed to make a reservation. Then I found the hostess and asked her if my table was available. She said it would be around 6. At 6:10 There was never the thought of I’m sorry. I again inquired about my table to the hostess and she said it would be 6:30. I was the only person at the bar and not many people in the restaurant. I asked if I could order and eat my dinner at the bar. I was told I could only order from the limited bar menu. At 6:20 I was seated at a table that was never occupied. All of this time my waitress, the bartenders, and the hostess were 60% socializing together at the bar. These folks would not know what to do if really busy. The food was good but not outstanding and the portions very small especially for the prices. I gave my waitress a nice cash tip and asked her not to share with the hostess or the bartender.
Service was slow. We ordered cocktails and waited quite a long time for them. They came out just before the appetizer, but food was good. It wasn't the best meal we ever had but definitely worth the visit. Price per person: £60–70 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5

Behind the intimate front room, Monteiths' bartender is known to improvise memorable cocktails — diners have raved about an unusual lemon-and-butterscotch creation — and a particular chateaubriand has developed a small cult following among repeat visitors. If you want one of those 'best steak' plates, consider asking for recommendations when you book: the kitchen tends to highlight flagship dishes on busy nights.
