Reviews - Monteiths
Reviews summary
Monteiths is a compact, intimate restaurant on Edinburgh’s High Street that wins praise for well-executed steaks, seafood and classic Scottish touches. Guests frequently highlight standout mains and comforting starters in a warm, romantic setting that suits anniversaries and special dinners. Service earns mixed notes: many diners find staff friendly and attentive, while others report slow or inconsistent front-of-house performance. The dining room is cozy and atmospheric but tight on space and lighting; prices skew toward the premium end, making reservations advisable for busy evenings.

Service was slow. We ordered cocktails and waited quite a long time for them. They came out just before the appetizer, but food was good. It wasn't the best meal we ever had but definitely worth the visit. Price per person: £60–70 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5

BRILLIANT. A must eat restaurant. I had the best steak of my life here, the chateaubriand. And the bartender made a drink with lemon and butterscotch...

The restaurant appeared to be understaffed, but overall it was a very pleasant experience.
The restaurant has a lovely setting and offers great service. We tried three different dishes and all of them were excellently prepared. I highly recommend this place.
The food and service were both excellent at this restaurant. The bar was also fantastic. We tried haggis for the first time and also had steak and salmon, all of which were delicious. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere that is perfect for a dining experience in Edinburgh. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
I had a wonderful time as a first time patron and was warmly welcomed by our server. She was an attentive and made us feel like family. The food was great and really enjoyed the experience. Would recommend this to others in Edinburgh.
Totally disappointed by this dining experience. Itison voucher entitled to ribeye steak chips and glass of fizz. Steak was tough, tasteless and full of fat. Peppercorn sauce was tasteless. Service was cheery, friendly but incredibly slow took 20 mins to serve water! Restaurant was quite compact not much space between tables and poorly lit. Reported disappointment of meal to server but just got a shrug of the shoulders in response. Poor value for money. Will not eat there again!

Very good food, also dessert and drinks very good. Service, advice, service very pleasant and competent. Very recommended.
Great little find along the Royal mile. I booked through Rae who was very friendly over the phone and just as nice when welcoming me. The cocktails were superb and the food was excellent. I had the scallops to start and the haggis neeps and tatties for main which was so tasty. All the staff were excellent and clearly well trained. Barman did great cocktails too. Would def come back again.
Excellent food, service, ambiance, and drinks! We thoroughly enjoyed everything from pre-dinner drinks to post-dinner coffee. Our service was attentive and warm, and each dish we had was amazing.
We ohd a subbar marulk with potatis och sötpotatis. Champinjoner och broccoli vid sidan about. Mycket välcomrad och perfectly loaded. Väl värt ett besök.
Amazing restaurant wish we had gone here on the Friday night for our anniversary instead of The Ivy. Wine was perfect. We never had starters as we get full quick. But they looked amazing. The mains where amazing coukd not fault (maybe did not need onion rings side dish as filling). All the dishes coming out looked amazing. We shared a dessert of Bruder which was lovely (maybe need setting a bit more). The staff where friendly, helpful amd amazing. Cosy little restaurant and bar looked amazing. My only negative which was nothing really was the toilet doors (but that me being picky)

Great food in a cosy place. Main dishes are on the small sides for the price, so you will need either starters or side dish, to feel full. Service is ok but somewhat non-caring.
We can fault nothing about our experience at Monteiths. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The ambiance was really pleasant. But the stars of the show was the food...where do we start?! Starters: they were generous, incredibly flavoursome and really beautifully presented. This was the best smoked haddock I've ever eaten. And the haggis starter was wonderful. See photos Main courses: the pork belly was sublime and looked stunning. The sauce/jus that came with it had a depth of flavour that was outstanding. The venison with mushroom had a range of full-bodied flavours and was cooked to perfection. Desserts: we were ambitious to go for dessert was we were quite full, but couldn't resist tasting more of this amazing food. Lemon brulee looked so pretty but packed such a range of flavours. The dark chocolate mousse was extremely moreish. See photos All in all, a truly amazing dining experience.
Amazing place. Great service from Monica .I will be back. The venison was the best I’ve ever had. The bartender Rae was great. Well done! Don’t waste your time looking for a place. Come here.
The haggis starter was superb and my venison was so tender. My partner’s salted cod was excellent. Next time the cauliflower though. Beware of a crazy lady setting fire to drinks menus! Sorry!
Amazing food. A little over our budget as we had to get side dishes to bump up the size of the meal. We went here as a treat as we were completely over all the other restaurants with their reheated food and mush. Completely blew us away! Such a cool little restaurant/bar. Staff were really accommodating and we loved it!

Good early dinner in a group of 10. Didn’t start well as the restaurant provided cut back menus (they thought they’d told us this was Policy, but as we booked online we were not told). As most of us had eaten there before or had looked at the menu online, the short list of options was not what we wanted. Fortunately as it was early they reluctantly gave us the full menu. If you are going in a large group it would be worth double checking. The best dish was the lemon sole, a very good option, as is the haggis starter. Service was good too.
Under a small gasse (I know they are here called by the royal mile closes is a wonderful little eating and wineable called monteiths. we came by.
We reserved a time for a late dinner on a Sunday night and it was great. The staff was great and offered good dinner choice. Food was excellent. Had the smoked duck and crispy bite for beginners. With honey old-fashioned. We had the braided ox and white fish for the main course.
Love this place! Some of the best cocktails I had and I had a lot of Lol. The Heather honey cocktail was beautiful and the apple bubble was a solid favorite. We will definitely be back for food once it looked amazing how it came out!
Great food, excellent service, intimate location, centrally located in the old town, Monteiths checks all boxes. We had an amazing roasted monk with pancetta, squash and sage toaster. Helpful Note: Monteiths is just from the Royal Mile. End a day to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the castle with dinner in Monteiths.
