Terrible Experience and Rude Service! My friend and I visited this cafe today, and it was, without exaggeration, one of the worst experiences we’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, the staff treated us with outright disrespect. We asked for a menu to order some drinks, but instead of simply giving us the card, the server repeatedly interrupted with “What do you want?”—no menu in sight. Despite our attempts to be polite and clarify that we wanted to see the options, they continued to respond dismissively, acting as if giving us the menu was an inconvenience. When it came time to pay, the attitude hadn’t changed. They treated us with the same cold, dismissive manner, making us feel unwelcome in every possible way. The entire experience was so off-putting that I couldn’t help but feel that this treatment went beyond just rudeness; I genuinely felt there might be an undertone of discrimination. This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable, and I would strongly recommend that others think twice before supporting a business that treats its customers so poorly. There are plenty of other cafes in the area with welcoming staff who actually want your business. Save yourself the negativity and go elsewhere. My friend and I have lived in the Gellert area for over 15 years. We are expat Swiss residents and speak German. We had been past this place but had never tried it so we stopped for a hot drink. We had a small well behaved dog and a happy toddler. The welcome and atmosphere was cold. The male owner was extreme rude when we asked for a menu or drink card. Normally I would have walked out but we needed a break. The lady was as cold as can be and gave us dirty looks. She should learn customer service. Should I mention at this point we have a tan or are darker skin tone? Perhaps I should. Seeing as many of Basel‘s global companies rely on well qualified expats to be the best , racism is not something I tolerate in my neighborhood and I despise those who belittle others in any business. I am disgusted at the treatment we received. The funny thing is they did not sound local either. Gellert as I know thankfully has more nice places and people. It needs needs nice cafes and bars perhaps it needs nicer more open minded people too! Shame on the owners u might be more busy if you had manners. Next time we’re sticking with Etna and Pfortnerhaus cafe bars. Much more respectful! Top restaurant with a heavenly garden, one of the most beautiful on the Basel square. Good menu from the kitchen and cellar...friendly service and great ambience!!?
Very nice coffee/restaurant. We enjoyed the meal on the terrace, the perfect spot on a hot summer day. The service was attentive and courteous. It was Austrian Week with the “guest chef” Rudi Slovak. The native Austrian has mastered his craft and conjures up a plate full of Vienna to Basel! The Wienerschnitzel with potato salad is a poem! The matching wine was also included. The price for food and drink was reasonable. I hope that there will be another Austrian Week soon. I'll be back.
