Ches's Famous Fish Chips - St. John's
Ches's Famous Fish Chips
Description
Ches's Snacks offers a full menu with good fish and chips, but some patrons find the flavor bland. The prices seem high for portions that are small and lacking in taste. Despite mixed reviews, some customers enjoy the mussels and weekly specials, highlighting friendly service and clean seating. Overall, the restaurant provides a decent fish and chips experience, with some considering it the best in town.

Great flaky fried fish but fries are not super and seafood chowder was so salty we struggled. So not bother ordering the odd 'neon green ' drink. Not sure why it 's even on the menu.
We three enjoyed the 3 piece cod and chips which we shared as a mid afternoon lunch. Fresh local cod was moist and the batter had decent crunch. PEI fries were sweet and a fine match. Tartar sauce was very good and squeeze-bottled instead of small packaged. The iceberg beer was quite light bodied and refreshing. Service was friendly and our family enjoyed our visit.
Before even stepping foot on the Rock I had heard about the infamous Ches'. So, what to do when you've spent a Saturday night on George Street and all other food vendors have huge line ups? You call a cab and have them drop by Ches' Fish Chips : Three of us found ourselves inside this St. John's icon not long before closing time and ordered ourselves fries to enjoy on the cab ride home. We also sweetened the cabby's deal by ordering him an order as well. While not the best fries I've ever eaten by a long shot, they served the purpose of filling that late night hunger void and had just enough grease to keep a drunk happy. One of my favourite memories is sitting on our host's front porch in the wee hours of the morning finishing up our cardboard container of Ches' fries and reminiscing about the fun night we had had. Are they the best I've ever had? No. Do they offer a late night grease fix? Yes b'y!
Over hyped. I've had better Fish Chips. I'm from Nova Scotia where using cod fish is generally considered the low end of fish and chips. It wasn't bad but the menu was limited and it just tasted like fairly typical batter. We were disappointed thought there was something special.
