Was David Watts at Maid-rite a mag?
It's been 20 years since my last visit, and I couldn't resist coming back for a meal! This restaurant has been a cherished family tradition for three generations, serving up delicious food for over 50 years. It's a classic spot that’s truly worth indulging in! View all feedback.
What Andy Kachelmeier dislikes about Maid-rite:
During a long road trip, we made a stop in Springfield and noticed a Made-Rite, which we just had to visit since we've enjoyed it in other parts of the country. A legit Springfield institution. So glad we went here, such a great history and the food is really great too, not to mention the best root beer you'll ever taste. And the service is outstanding!!! Might have to go back before we ride out.
As a life long Springfield resident, it's def not as a remember. Sandwich was a bit salty. Small fries were SMALL. And for two people, $26.00 is crazy!
This is the original Maid-Rite. The menu is simple (4 combo options), but prices seemed high (but I guess everything seems that way anymore). For a hamburger-size Maid-Rite sandwich, handful of fries, and frosty mug of root beer, it was $11 (2024). So, the portion and quality was a bit low compared to price. Service was quick and friendly. The inside could stand to be updated. The owner (I think) was very friendly and explained that this particular Maid-Rite is the original from the 1900s/1910s. The inside seemed a bit cluttered and old; I understand wanting to keep the authenticity of the original, but having boxes and books and various junk stacked in a corner gives a very cluttered, unkept feel. Nonetheless, the food was decent.
This was a definite throw back in time. Super cold frosted mug of root beer was what brought me back the next day for round two. Great place a must if you are in Springfield!
We had an excellent experience at this restaurant. We brought our three kids along, and the atmosphere was fantastic. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. It has a nostalgic vibe, reminiscent of a classic burger joint. The menu is straightforward, and we decided to try one of everything. The sandwiches were delicious, the fries were tasty, and I was particularly impressed with the chili and cheese curds. The portion sizes were just right – a true representation of how Americans should be eating, rather than just what seems appealing. I highly recommend this place and will definitely come back. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth checking out compared to dining at a chain restaurant.

This is a fantastic spot for dining, learning, and enjoying delicious root beer! The atmosphere is fun and welcoming as well!
I really enjoy this restaurant, and the owner is fantastic. During my last visit, I noticed an old jukebox that plays vinyl records. I asked the owner if it was operational, and he handed me a few quarters, inviting me to pick some songs. I was amazed to find out I could play a song for just a quarter! Next time, instead of using the drive-thru, I recommend parking and going inside. It’s definitely worth the experience!
A wonderful local gem! The owner is incredibly friendly and shares the history of the place in a delightful, bite-sized way. The house-made root beer served in chilled mugs is fantastic, and the loose meat sandwich is excellent as well!
The best homemade root beer in Springfield! The owners are wonderful, and it's a must-visit place if you're in town. If you live here, you probably already love this spot!

During a long road trip, we made a stop in Springfield and noticed a Made-Rite, which we just had to visit since we've enjoyed it in other parts of the country. The food, drinks, and service were all fantastic, but what truly made my day was the rich history of the establishment! I was amazed to learn that this building is one of the original franchises and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, having been built in 1924. It also proudly claims the title of the first drive-thru restaurant!
I arrived at the restaurant about 45 minutes before closing, excited to try a loose meat sandwich from the first drive-thru place I could find. We walked over from the Lincoln Museum, and it was a quick stroll. We spent around 20 minutes dining inside. We placed our order at the window, and our food was quickly brought to our table. The service was outstanding, and the staff were very friendly. The atmosphere was straightforward and unpretentious. I really enjoyed the sandwich and fries. If I lived in Springfield, this would definitely be one of my go-to spots. If I find myself back in Springfield, I would absolutely return.
This is the first drive-thru diner in the country. Nothing has changed, except that they no longer include gumdrops with their incredible loose-meat (Maid-Rite) sandwiches.
