Oil Lamp - Perry
Oil Lamp
Description
At The Oil Lamp, diners experience a mix of opinions on its homemade-style dishes and service. While many rave about the friendly staff and comforting flavors reminiscent of a family gathering, others criticize the high prices and inconsistent food quality. Complaints often highlight small portion sizes and underwhelming dishes, such as tough pork chops or canned vegetables. However, some patrons appreciate the variety of options, from hearty meats to fresh vegetables, and celebrate the inviting atmosphere. Ultimately, The Oil Lamp has potential, but its fluctuating quality leaves guests longing for a more consistent dining experience.

Super disappointed! For two people to eat- two small scoops of veggies and a meat (pot roast and catfish) it was over $30 (no drinks-just four scoops of vegetables and two meats) I’ve ate here before and it was… not great, but this time was atrocious. The vegetables were 100% from a can, the Mac and cheese was inedible. Dry, but also mushy somehow, the pot roast or roast beef was literally sour. The catfish was ok- my daughter and I split it because everything was just…. Really really bad. don’t know if I caught them at the end of the day or if they don’t use fresh stuff on certain days; I can’t fathom all of the rave reviews compared to the experience we have had… twice.
Oh my goodness! Delicious food. This time I enjoyed the roast beef and rice. Great flat green beans, perfectly seasoned. My friend had the chicken and said it was wonderful. Friday night specials were ribeye, trout or grouper.
We were having an educators training in Perry at the Board of Education. When we broke for lunch, I was the only one of my 4 colleagues familiar with the area. So they asked me for suggestions. So I decided on The Oil Lamp. As we were placing our order we all asked for our food to be served in to-go boxes because we didn’t think we had enough time to dine in since we only had an hour lunch break. After we all got our food we saw that we had 30 minutes so we decided sit and eat our lunch in the restaurant. As we were gathering our things to leave, a gentleman came to us and said, I want yall to know if you ask for to-go plates and eat in the restaurant we’re going to charge you 10%. I attempted to explain our reason for getting the to-go plates. He then said it again, if you get a to-go plate and eat inside you will be charged 10%. We left the restaurant shortly afterwards. My colleagues said, the food was good, but their complaints were, for $25 they got such small portions. And, as for our experience, it should be our prerogative to order our food in to go plates and eat it wherever we choose. If we paid $25 for the food we should be able to take the leftovers with us. This was very poor welcoming customer service for me and my colleagues who were visiting your establishment for the first time. Dine in or carry out, in take out plates or dine in plates, the customer should be welcomed to enjoy food as they choose.
