Atmosphere is great. It is easy to miss the small entrance but once inside it stretches back quite a way, with different nooks for privacy. A great place to meet for a coffee and catch up or for a meal. They also do 'suspended ' free coffees for homeless people! View all feedback.
What Chris M doesn't like about 39 Steps:
Still getting over the rudeness of the staff member I encountered. I used to frequent this place before the current owners and take guests there for meals. Never again. View all feedback.
I 've been a regular at 39 Steps since it opened. Fair to say it 's at its lowest ebb currently in all that time. I still drop in for a coffee pretty regularly, and I want it to do well because it 's my local, but it needs to lift its game. It doesn 't seem that there 's a manager there at all these days, as no one really seems to be in charge. If someone is in charge, they need to take charge and sort out the problems. The coffee (the most important bit) is hit and miss, depending on who makes it. By way of constructive feedback: Shouldn 't have to wait 10 15 mins for a coffee. At busy times, get your team cranked up and working as a team. You 've got two steamers, so you shouldn 't have a load of coffee shots lined up with people waiting on the one and only person who is doing milk. Coffee should come how it was ordered every time. The young staff are nice enough, but 'highly motivated ' isn 't how I 'd describe the overall operation. It was never 'fine dining ' but it was decent. Now it 's not, and it 'll bomb completely if it isn 't sorted out. C 'mon guys.

I stopped for a quick coffee on a very cold holiday Monday morning. The cafe was closed, but they were serving coffee through the window. The barista was friendly, but seemed tired. The coffee was just average - there are better places in Canberra that are not too far from here.
I really enjoy the coffee and egg and bacon rolls at this restaurant. However, every time I order takeout, I have to wait approximately 40 minutes, just for a simple egg and bacon roll. I am considering not returning here anymore.
Nice breakfast and coffee. Had the smashed avo and partner had the egg and bacon roll. Both big servings cooked well and nice strong coffee.
