Description

Pope Joan is a bustling spot with a mix of reviews. Some found the food disappointing, with dishes like the turkey curry and English breakfast falling short of expectations. Others enjoyed the variety and quality of the menu, with standout items like the omelet and pumpkin pie. The cafe itself has a charming layout and decor, offering a cozy setting for a meal. While some found the prices on the higher side, overall it seems like Pope Joan has its ups and downs, making it a place worth revisiting with a more careful selection of dishes.

Visited on a Saturday lunchtime which probably is not the best time for a first visit. It was full and we (3 adults, 2 kids) had to hang around for a table. It didn't take too long and the staff were very quick and efficient with the changeover and with our orders. The menu is interesting with some unusual ingredient mixes; don't expect the old traditional fare. Sizes are generous, especially the kids menu. The only hiccup we had was that the waitress was not sure as to how spicy one dish was and said it was mild. It was my grandson's meal and the first bite showed that the waitress was guessing! The meal was swapped with no problem. Pluses are the atmosphere, staff and menu, but the prices probably a bit high - certainly for lunch.

We have driven past Pope Joan many times and it looked busy.....the reviews were good ,so we thought we would give it a try.......there are a few sections....we were put on a table for 2 near the bar next to a loud table...we asked to be moved but they said they were all booked out....we observed a table that was empty and was still empty when we left.....the table service was very good but the food was very average when you consider its reputation and the price....wine list was very good......overall this place doesn't live up to the hype....

This place is always busy. I have been a few times and am always happy with service and the food. I really enjoyed my smoked salmon and fennel salad on toast with poached egg. A very tasty combination of flavours. My coffee took a little while, but once again it is a busy place. Food was faster actually. It has a nice interior and a few different areas to sit based on your group size. Good for big groups but book ahead.

It's no wonder Pope Joan is a dining draw-card, as well as a well established Melbourne cafe favourite and institution.

Pope Joan is my one of my favourite brunch places in Brunswick.
