Nestled in a charming town, this restaurant presents a mixed bag of dining experiences. While some patrons praised the exceptional quality of dishes like fish and chips, others reported underwhelming meals, such as watery tikka masala and lackluster prawn cocktails. The Sunday carvery showcased tender meats but suffered from slow service and smaller portion sizes. Cleanliness and ambiance received mixed reviews, though the attentive staff consistently earned commendations. Overall, this eatery shines in some areas while falling short in others, making it a hit-or-miss destination for diners seeking quality food and a pleasant atmosphere.
My friend and I stayed at the restaurant on Thursday night and we were very disappointed with our experience. While the furnishings were nice and the room was spacious and well organized, there were several shortcomings. When we arrived at 2:00pm, we were disappointed to find that they did not have any draft real ale, plain crisps, or nuts available. Additionally, when we returned from a meeting at 9:45pm, the bar was still open but they had already stopped serving. Throughout our stay, it was challenging to find anyone available to provide assistance. The next morning, we went to the main hotel for breakfast at 8:30am only to find it completely locked up and no sign of breakfast being served. Overall, we were not impressed with the service and amenities provided by the restaurant.
We had to spend an hour in town before the Railway Heritage centre opened, and this was one of the places open where you can sit down in warm. I think that's the last good thing we can say about this place. The service was slow, and the English Breakfast we ordered take long time to get and was rather cold and not really fresh. They charged £1,50 for a babychino which was not even a babychino just a little warm milk and £1,95 for two additional toasts to the breakfast. Avoid them for ever.
My husband and I booked this break with a voucher we received at Christmas and it was a belated anniversary celebration due toLockdown rules and restrictions.I emailed the hotel in advance and asked if we could possibly have a nice top floor room and this was exactly what we got. All the accommodation is behind the hotel in a separate building and we liked this because you could come and go as you pleased without having to go through the hotel. We were very pleased with the spacious top floor room we were allocated. It was spotlessly clean with a very comfortable bed and lots of wardrobe and drawer space as well as 2 comfortable chairs. A full sized kettle and also a good hairdryer were provided and ample tea and coffee sachets. The only slight problem we had was a noisy fan in the bathroom which did not switch off with the light. We realised by our second night that the door also had to be completely closed to switch off the fan so we got a better nights sleep the next day. The restaurant in The County is lovely and we dined there on Saturday night, my scampi was delicious and my husband enjoyed his gammon. Table service and social distancing was very good. We also had a nice breakfast on Sunday morning in The County Coffee Shop which was very tasty and good value. All the staff at The County are very friendly and helpful and the hotel is in a very good area, ideal for visiting the Lakes or nearby Morecambe where we enjoyed visiting. We did have a problem with the noise of traffic when we had the windows open but it did go quiet at night when the windows were closed and we slept well once we had sorted the fan out.
We decided to stop by this restaurant on a whim after missing our bus and having an hour to spare. It had been about 10 years since our last visit, but we were pleasantly surprised this time. It was quiet, with us being the only customers, so there wasn't much of an atmosphere. However, we were just looking for a drink, and we were happy with what we got. The staff were friendly and cheerful, and they had Covid measures in place. It exceeded our expectations, so we would definitely come back again.
For starters, we had two prawn cocktails and a camembert for two. The prawns were small and poor value, served with just lettuce and prawns. The camembert lacked flavor and could have benefited from chutney or sauce. For mains, the Chicken Kiev was strangely cut in half and butterflyed on the plate, which was odd. The fish was adequate but a little soggy, and the vegetarian curry was reportedly nice. Overall, our experience was average and we would not choose to return as there are better dining options available.
