Dark Sky Project - Lake Tekapo
Dark Sky Project
Description
Under a vault of crystalline stars and beside Lake Tākāpo, the Dark Sky experiences pair awe-inspiring astronomy with hearty regional dining. Passionate guides lead summit stargazes with powerful telescopes—sometimes revealing the Milky Way and even star birth—while a polished indoor digital theatre offers an engaging Plan B. The adjoining Dark Sky Diner delivers reliably excellent fare: tender ribs, lamb, salmon and thoughtful vegan dishes, plus organic ice cream, all served in a cozy, view-filled setting. Reservations are recommended for peak nights; limited menu keeps quality focused.

My partner and I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. The pork ribs were outstanding, earning a solid 5/5 for their tenderness and generous portion size. I tried the vegan pasta, which was full of authentic flavors and not overly salty, which I appreciated. The vegan pizza appetizer was also incredibly delicious. There was a slight wait for the main courses, but it wasn't excessive and definitely worth it. We would certainly return for another meal.
To be honest, we didn't have many dining options while visiting this small town, so we were fortunate to discover Dark Sky Diner. Although their menu isn't extensive, that's likely what allows them to maintain such high food quality. The beef was incredibly tender, and the appetizer was quite filling on its own. I also enjoyed the organic ice cream—delicious and delightful!
This is an incredible place to explore! Although I didn't get to experience the dark sky this time, I plan to return for that. I enjoyed a delicious strawberry milkshake and the fries were generously portioned and worth trying. Overall, I truly loved my visit here. I also noticed some charming drawings at the bar counter that I found delightful; I really appreciate that kind of creativity. The atmosphere is filled with positive vibes. Cheers!
What an amazing experience! I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Jake and Josh; I was truly touched by your passion. This was a late-night tour at 2 AM, and I only wish I could join again!
