my son came home the other day, and said, Mom, I had the best I had to bring you to the golden ox. I think it's new, of course I said it's been around for years. 8 of us went to dinner tonight, not for years. our steaks/dinners were wonderful! my father told old stories about the throwing when he was young. What Korey Monahan doesn't like about Golden Ox Restaurant:
The Golden Ox is a beautiful, old establishment type restaurant. We met friends for a birthday dinner here. The bartender and our server were very personable. We ordered oysters on the half-shell to start and they were soo good! The steaks however, were not cooked to order and poor quality meat for a high end steak house. Overall, oysters were the best part of the meal ...but they didn't have to cook these. Maybe it... View all feedback.
I was there with four friends, we had a reservation and were immediately sat. the restaurant is a piece of kc history. it is beautifully decorated with fabulous historical pictures. everything we ordered was absolutely delicious, from escargot and calamari to urrippe and filets. If they like blue cheese, I would definitely recommend the blue cheese butter on their steak. our server, craig, was all they could do, plus some. when he was asked, he made some good suggestions, he was very attentive, he also gave us a small tour and history lessons on the restaurant and on the plot. it really took off our beautiful evening. the bartender is also to be praised. the expresso martinis and dirty martinis were the pointed notches. I would like to be able to return soon, but the prices forbid that for me. I have to save my next visit for a special occasion.
The food was delicious, I had the rock steak and my man had stripped the kc. both agreed that my best was. our server briget was simply amazing. she offered both to the weeping and the deserted great sight. it was a perfect evening until the manager/owner came to check for us. we ran over the food and bridget, then commented on the wonderful pace of our food. her immediate answer was that we screwed up her reservations. if I pay over $50 for a steak, with all the extras for an extra cost, (total bill for 3 was $475 tipp) I will take my time and really enjoy my food and experience. the manager/owner really took us away from our evening and made us feel dissatisfied. later, the manager/owner came back to us by stating that she actually had no one waiting for our table, but she gave the party of 6 to the stinking eye. that was so unprofessional. they do not complain about customers to other customers. 5 stars for briget, took 2 stars because of the appointment of the manager/owner. next time in kc we find another steakhouse.
What a disappointment! I was here several times in this restaurant when I lived here, came back to visit kansas city with my daughter in the spring vacation, was not here since 2006. eating has really gone downhill, our steaks have been carved to the point where everything she could taste, hard meat. so sad! the waiting staff dressed professionally. the best part of the meal was the keilsalat and the brot. the extremely belly manager argued with me that I had eaten there in 2018 when I was not in kc since 2006. that was the last place I was eating with my mother before she died. what a terrible experience! Skip this and go to ruth chris or hereford house, eating is overpriced and terrible what a shame!

This place is where the Kansas City Strip was created, and well worth coming here to experience it. My ribeye was excellent, cooked perfectly and tasted great. Nice choice of cocktails as well. Decor is vintage and upscale. Highly recommended!
