What Jayne Deangelis doesn't like about Tlaxcalli:
I've never let another diner's choice of clothing, whether it's shorts or sleeveless shirts, ruin my dining experience. The snobbery displayed here is quite off-putting. A truly quality experience is determined by how you treat others, and this place could be excellent if they shifted their focus away from the superficial. View all feedback.
We really enjoyed this establishment. The aquachiles are no joke! Very spicy! In general, we liked the authentic menu and the ambiance. Would definitely come back again!
This was the best traditional Mexican food experience I've had in 15 years. The birria was authentically prepared, the beans were outstanding, and you could truly feel the pride and love the chef put into his dishes. Absolutely amazing!!!
Horrible service. They were half open and the place was empty. We went with a few families together with smallKids age 3-6yo. Basically told us they don 't have anything. Then when one of our kiddos went to look at a decoration on the wall the owner who as sitting in the back came walking up to the kiddo and told him to go back to his parents. Then I could hear the owner say, you believe this ****! We left, will never go back.
Food was so amazing I didn't even take pictures or come up for air. Ever since going to TX it really changed my palette for Mexican food, and nothing could compare until Tlaxcalli. Coming back home, I realized Hawaii's representation of Mexican cuisine is sad and a far cry from authenticity. But this place.....chef's kiss. The only place on the island you can get tacos dorados and lamb barbacoa. We also had the birria, and the churro bread pudding. Everything was so delicious and perfect my mouth is salivating just thinking about it. Like a heathen, I could have drank the consommé, pork fat and all! Will, our server/waiter/all of the above was also really awesome!
This place deserves more than 3.8 stars. As a native San Diegan I've been craving good Mexican food since moving here. This place doesn't disappoint. Everything was really good, and reasonably priced for Honolulu, drinks included. Just don't come here expecting Taco shop fare, that's not what they're about and they aren't afraid to tell you that.I will say my lamb barbacoa (which is more of a soup) was a bit of a miss, it had a lot of weird fat floating around that wasn't very appetizing. The lamb was also a little bland and dry. The tuna ceviche was some of the best ceviche I've ever had.Our server was very nice and super helpful recommending dishes and drinks. Will be back.
