Chalkboard restaurant offers a good brunch menu with tasty food and good service, set in a very attractive outdoor space. However, some guests were put off by an unfriendly and oddly dressed hostess. On the other hand, the bar and cocktails were praised, although service at the table was seen as lacking. Complaints about inedible food on New Year's Day were in stark contrast to the normally delicious offerings of the kitchen. While some dishes were subpar, others were fantastic, such as the poached apple dessert and the strip steak. Despite some hiccups, the overall experience for many was described as superb and excellent, with exceptional service and delicious dishes. Some guests noted the need for improvement in terms of clearing used plates and utensils promptly.
Nice meal at Chalkboard, the restaurant in Hotel Les Mars with a Chalk Hill winery connection. Many of Chalkboard's ingredients come from a four-acre organic garden located at Sonoma's Chalk Hill Winery estate. The homemade pasta dishes we had were well-seasoned and delicious. The watermelon salad was light and fresh and included goat cheese foam and the fried tempura ribs (boneless) were sticky, sweet and decadent. The Black Forest cherry dessert was very rich, pudding-like, and generous even for two people. Would recommend, specifically for their homemade pasta. A smooth service experience. Fun eating on the back patio on a warm early fall night.
Tapas style which is a perfect way to enjoy different types of dishes. Great selection of wines and cocktails. The short rib was cooked to perfection and the squash as well as the garlic added a rich falvor to it. Salmon was delicious with the right amount of seasoning and was very tender. The pasta, Porcini Gigli, was hands down my favorite. The pasta was cooked al dente with wild mushrooms which were really tasty topped with garlic cream sauce. The sauce added a great touch with unique flavors. Highly recommend it. Excellent service. Will definitely be back.
For large parties, they always recommend a pre fixed menu. It was about $80 a person and you make your selections before your arrival. Menu: 1) Small Bites Cheese and Charcuterie platter, loved the variety for this board. Creamy and salty cheeses with cheese crackers, dried fruit and nuts. 2) Salads Chalk Hill Estate Greens, the pecorino and the citronette paired well with the greens 3) Pasta Strozzapreti with Gulf Shrimp, very lemony and fresh, I enjoyed this dish a lot. 4) Seafood Salmon. Celery root puree was yummy, enjoyed it more than the salmon. 5) Meat Cabernet Braised Short Rib. Loved the polenta and the flavors on this one. The horseradish was a nice touch. 6) Vegetables Sugar snap peas, just okay. Asparagus with vinaigrette, skippable. 7) Dessert Trio of dessert, enjoyed the Panna Cotta more than anything. The coconut ice cream was not bad. The chocolate cake was very rich and dense. For 18 people they brought about 4 plates of each item that we ordered. It was definitely more than enough food and we had so much food leftover. Service: The service was great. We had a large party and the family style was very accommodating. We had about 18 people in our party. We did not expect an automatic 25% gratuity though, so it was quite shocking. I thought usually the standard was 20%, but 25% was a bit steep. Overall, the food was just okay and for the price and gratuity we were paying, didn't feel like it was worth it. Maybe I'd come here again with a smaller party to try other dishes, but for large parties, it just wasn't for me.
We had a wonderful experience here! The service was very friendly and pretty quick, and the food was absolutely amazing. We also ordered cocktails, which were great but obviously drove up the price-per-person. Our waitress said it's usually suggested toorder a few things and share, which made it easier for us to try more menu items and worked out really well for us.
Sticky ribs: good but a little disappointing. It was just boneless tempura covered ribs and I feel like it could have been elevated in some way. Tomato panzanella really good, the tomatoes were very yummy Porcini gigli best dish of thenight. Ample mushrooms, gigli was well cooked. yum. Halibut cooked well, good dish. Roasted carrots. Meh, I makebetter sous vide brown butter carrots at home. Desserts were both super yummy. I think we got the olive oil cake and thecheesecake.
