There are two places in Romford where you can find pie and mash: Robins and McDowell's. I have had trouble trying to eat at McDowell's in the past because I always arrive late and they are closed. However, I was fortunate enough to catch them open one day, so I decided to give it a try even though I had already planned to go out for dinner. At first, I thought it would just be another pie and mash place, but I was pleasantly surprised by the generous portions and abundance of liquor. The liquor had a rich and flavorful taste, with hints of parsley that added a grassy freshness. The mashed potatoes were a bit lumpy, but adding salt and chili vinegar made them more enjoyable. Moving on to the pie, the minced beef filling was surprisingly tasty, with a salty and slightly savory flavor reminiscent of marmite. Unfortunately, there were some chewy bits in the beef that were a bit disappointing, but overall the consistency was good.
This place is hidden within the smaller shopping hall in Romford, our first time visiting and we were not disappointed, absolutely delicious pies the ones that are ever so slightly crispy. I shall most certainly be visiting again with my family and i highly recommend you do also.
The only traditional pie and mash so that I’ve been to that had more gravy in the pie than meat. So much gravy that it sorted out of the pie when I put the knife in. Was ok. Wouldn’t rush back
I couldn't get a table at Robins because there was a long line outside, so I decided to give Macdowells a try. It turned out to be a mistake. While this pie shop is usually good, this time the pie crust was very soft and seemed undercooked. The filling was tasty and there was plenty of it, but I thought there was too much gravy (if that's possible with pie, mash, and liquor). I definitely prefer Robins.
My mum ordered 100 pie and mash for a party. Although they don’t usually do catering the owner was outstanding. All pie and mash were packaged up for us on time to collect. Tonnes of liquor was given in big containers. She went beyond her duty to make sure it was still good when reheated. All the guests loved the food. Really pleased.
Located in Romford, Macdowells is known for its traditional pie and mash. Despite some mixed reviews, the pies are described as crusty and meaty, the mash fluffy, and the liquor tasty. Some appreciate the atmosphere and friendly staff, while others find the gravy excessive and the liquor lacking. However, the owner's exceptional service, catering for parties, and variety of menu options are noted as positives. Overall, Macdowells offers a unique dining experience in Romford that is worth a try for those seeking classic British comfort food.

Me and my misses went to here sat morning and got a tea and roll with half a sausage in it and no butter it was disgusting and had 5 women severing and still didn't get it right , we won't be going there again it was worst lunch meal we have ever had and also the tea was stewed
Haven't had pie mash for at least 30 years, I had good expectations to honest it was quite good quality. The liquor does have something missing but when you soak it in vinegar you cant tell any way. don't think they put butter in the mash like Kelly's used to but it tasted proper mash al be it a little lumpy. Décor in the restaurant was a little dark dated for me no menus at the table, you have to go order pay at the counter which seemed strange. My wife had haddock chips, haddock good, chips not nice. would go back for the pies again though.
This is one of two pie and mash shops in Romford and I would say that it is in second place. Although the food is good wholesome grub and a goodly sized portion, I found the liquor to be lacking something. and is not as good as what you get in Bethnal Green. Overall I would go there again if I was passing as in my book why eat a kebab when you can have pie, mash and liquor. Just a pity it isn't open later in the day.
