Fox Reformed - Hackney
Fox Reformed
Description
The Fox Reformed presents itself as a cozy local eatery with its charming decor, lovely outdoor garden, and enjoyable game options like chess and backgammon. While many patrons rave about the delicious steak and excellent wine selection, others cite inconsistency in the menu, particularly with the Sunday roasts. Complaints about oddly flavored dishes and inadequate portion sizes have surfaced, alongside mixed reviews on service quality. Despite these discrepancies, the ambiance and welcoming staff create a pleasant dining experience, making it a noteworthy alternative to local gastro pubs, although some may hesitate to return frequently.

I recently visited The Fox after many years and had a wonderful experience. My companion and I both enjoyed perfectly cooked steaks with salad and chips. The Shiraz wine we had was excellent, and the service was top-notch. The young, courteous staff were attentive and had an old-school approach, which was refreshing to see. The decor hasn't changed much in the past 20 years, but it is still pleasant and cozy, giving off a retro 80's bistro vibe. We look forward to making The Fox a regular dining spot, especially since we live nearby.
Food midweek is excellent but have never been at weekends when the menu is quite different. Needless to say, lovely wines. Less obviously, the place is run by and frequented by some very nice, interesting people indeed.
This was our 3rd visit, not one of regular sunday roast venues but thought we would give it a go. Do I regret it ? no. Was it strange ? yes. We opted for the veggie roast, what came to our table was as I sad odd. The gravy was curried.....and I mean very curried........4hours later i can still taste it. Funny really as we nearly went for an indian. The food was acceptable but nothing special. The desserts we had, brulee (undercooked) and cheesecake covered in cocca powder (it was a lemon cheesecake) were just ok.Service was acceptable, but the experienced sligtly tainted by a very loud couple who engaged the staff in a very loud conversation about paris and the french. Both not a patch on cyprus apparently. Will we go back........probably not for a while but I am glad its there,
We love dropping in to the Fox Reformed for a simple meal, or even just a glass of wine. Chess, backgammon and other games available, plus bust of Edgar Allen Poe who has a Stoke Newington Connection.
The fox is local to us, we've eaten here a few times been for drinks at other times. The food has always been lovely they have a great little courtyard garden out the back. Good offering of wines beers and we've always had excellent service. Would recommend as a great alternative to the gastro pub offerings on church st it's a little calmer more cosy.
