Lucky's - Boulder
Lucky's
Description
Nestled in a vibrant corner of Boulder, this charming bakery offers a delightful array of vegan and gluten-free options, though all vegan selections are also gluten-free. Diners rave about unique treats like tahini brownies, savory curry biscuits, and rotating flavor cupcakes, but some find the gluten-free options can be dense and gritty. While the atmosphere is inviting and the staff friendly, limited availability of certain items and occasional staleness can be disappointing. Overall, it's a must-visit for those seeking scrumptious dairy-free delights, particularly if you arrive early to snag the best offerings before they sell out.

We used to visit this restaurant frequently, but the management has been consistently poor. It seems to change as often as the seasons. Overall, the restaurant has never been well-managed. While there are a few servers we appreciate, there are also a couple of problematic staff members, and turnover seems high. The great servers we liked haven't been there the last couple of times, so they might have left. During our most recent visit, we had a server who was chaotic, running around and trying to assist other customers, clearly having a rough day. When she finally came to take our order, she got it completely wrong, which we can understand given her situation. However, what we don’t understand is why she was dismissive and walked away while we were trying to communicate our needs. The situation escalated with the blonde manager, and it was completely unacceptable. We won’t delve into the details, but it was really bad. There are some excellent breakfast spots in Boulder, so we recommend avoiding this one to steer clear of any unpleasant experiences.
This review is a response to Kristin Sweeting Morelli's comment below. My husband and I were seated next to Kristin during lunch service on Friday. Let me start by saying that we love Lucky's. Even when they are short-staffed, they are honest about it and set our expectations for potentially slower service; many of their staff have recently returned to college. This restaurant is a true gem. The food is fantastic, and it really feels like a local hangout. It has become a bit of a refuge for us—almost like Cheers! That said, when my husband and I went to Lucky's for a casual lunch, we were really annoyed by a couple sitting behind us on the patio who decided it was appropriate to have a loud Zoom call. We could clearly hear the person on the other end, and it went on for several minutes. We didn’t say anything, but it was Kristin. Later, we witnessed Kristin criticizing one of the servers for various complaints mentioned in her review, one being that her husband’s "protein style" sandwich—which she condescendingly called a “common term”—was wrong. Honestly, I had never heard of it, and since it’s a keto thing, it was confusing because he also ordered fries. I digress. When we left, I saw the original server crying in the bathroom over what had happened. The bottom line is that I think Kristin is a self-centered individual. She seems to think it's acceptable to disrupt other diners while expecting her own experience to be flawless. I hope the manager told her to leave and not come back, because the sweet, family-friendly atmosphere is one of the things that makes Lucky's so special.
This is a highly popular restaurant that serves Ozo coffee from Boulder in generous mugs, delicious food, and offers a great selection of gluten-free breads and treats. I highly recommend their gluten-free lemon ricotta donut holes! Their pancakes look incredible, but I always find myself ordering the Eggs Benedict instead. Just keep in mind that the potatoes are not included automatically; you need to request them. There's plenty of outdoor seating available for the warmer months. Be prepared for a wait depending on what time you arrive. I really love the atmosphere here, whether I'm dining alone or with friends.
Great neighborhood cafe! Expect a wait for breakfast on the weekends…but it’s worth it.
