Was Cody Smith at Izakaya Amu a mag?
They really do a great job at creating an authentic sushi experience. No shoes, tips for proper dining, etc. not for the beginner but “legit af” as the kids say View all feedback.
What Tom Crabtree dislikes about Izakaya Amu:
We visited as a family of four, and our meal took two hours to be served. The service was very slow. The table next to us even had to request their food to go because they were running late. The server was clearly overwhelmed and doing her best, so I don’t hold it against her. However, the manager definitely needs to hire more staff. The food was delicious, but don’t come if you’re very hungry! View all feedback.

Freshest and best sashimi in Boulder. Try the chef’s sake recs. Dish arrangement is simplistic but pretty. The chopsticks are so high quality even though they’re single usage. Be prepared to drop $150 on a single meal, but definitely THE place to go

Our experience was disappointing. Upon arrival, the hostess/server asked us how she could assist us, which set a negative tone right from the beginning. While she was friendly, she mistakenly delivered the wrong item to our table. When we pointed it out, she laughed it off and left it on our bill (though to be fair, we did eat it). We could have overlooked this, but unfortunately, the food itself was not good. We’ve dined in hundreds of Japanese restaurants, including many izakayas throughout North America and Japan, and I’m baffled by the positive reviews this place receives. None of us found anything particularly good, and some dishes were quite disappointing. We ultimately left and chose to have dinner elsewhere. We won’t be returning.
Great food and great staff 4 star for atmosphere as is strong, but could use a bit of updating.
The food was excellent; I tried the Shabu Shabu and the Unagi. Both dishes were very authentic and delicious. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but the quality speaks for itself!
Amu Restaurant offers an unforgettable dining experience, immersing guests in authentic Japanese izakaya culture. Upon entering, patrons are invited to remove their shoes, setting the tone for a cozy, intimate atmosphere that blends traditional decor with a modern twist. The menu, featuring exquisite tempura, fresh sashimi, and flavorful udon, showcases meticulous craftsmanship that delights food enthusiasts. Although prices are on the higher side, the exceptional quality of the dishes and the warm service from knowledgeable staff make it worthwhile. For those seeking an authentic taste of Japan, Amu is a must-visit culinary gem in Boulder.

Izakaya is a style of Japanese dining, and this restaurant executes it perfectly. The atmosphere is primarily that of a bar, with only one or two table settings. The space is small and cozy, with a casual vibe. The service is excellent and the food and drinks are even better. The staff greets you in Japanese, adding to the authentic experience. Some previous pictures of the interior may not be accurate, so it's best to search online for a true sense of the vibe. Overall, Izakaya is a must-visit spot for Japanese cuisine enthusiasts. Just remember to take off your shoes before entering.
The atmosphere and decor are absolutely perfect. The food and drinks were excellent quality. The staff were very friendly with our group. I can definitely see myself returning to this restaurant whenever I am in Boulder.
I love the atmosphere of this little place. It felt like I was back in the 90's. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. I really wanted to try the ramen but it is only made on Monday. The waitress recommended the udon and it was amazing! I couldn't believe how good the broth was. The noodles and egg were cooked perfectly. The sushi I got was pretty good but not amazing. I was excited to try the yuzu margarita and it was good but a little pricey.

This restaurant may not be inexpensive, but it’s well worth the cost. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Every dish I tried was some of the most authentic Japanese food I’ve ever had, and it was absolutely delicious. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant in the future. They also offer a wide selection of sake.

I really enjoy the traditional Japanese Izakaya atmosphere, especially having to take off my shoes in the main area of the restaurant! I definitely miss my favorite Izakaya spot in San Jose.
Amu offers the finest Japanese cuisine in Boulder. The tempura dishes are delicious and the fresh sashimi will make your dinner truly fantastic. It is the best Japanese restaurant in town.
Entering a restaurant that embodies traditional Japanese customs was a truly amazing experience. Removing my shoes instantly transported me back to dining in Japan. The...
