Five is closing soon, so this feels a little futile. I wasn't overly impressed, but in fact the dishes I ordered were tasty and well-made, and the service was very friendly. It didn't rise above that weird feeling of a restaurant in a hotel, though. Hotel restaurants are always a bit weird, and though this one was better than most, it still had that feeling of not quite being real.
Five was a good choice for a meal before a performance. However, this time there seemed to be a lack of communication between the kitchen and the service staff. After placing our order, some unexpected items were added to our meal that were not advertised and had the potential to trigger food allergies. We were informed that Five will soon be transforming into a Mediterranean restaurant. In order to improve the customer experience, it is essential for the kitchen staff and the service staff to work together more effectively.
Five has been a good choice for before a performance. This time something happened. There was a disconnected communication between the kitchen and the service staff. Things changed after an order was placed much to the server's chagrin. Things were added that were not advertised and could trigger food allergies. We're told that Five is closing shortly to convert itself into a Mediterranean themed restaurant. My feeling is that the kitchen staff needs slapping around to improve the customer experience, i.e., the service staff and kitchen staff on the same page
All the information I could find about said that it opened for dinner at but on OpenTable, I was able to make a reservation for which seemed kind of confusing. I was watching an afternoon and an evening play at Berkeley Rep. The first play ended at and the next started at so I really wanted to make sure I could sit down at and have time for a leisurely dinner. They did actually open at and we were able to sit down right away. Service was very prompt, and we had plenty of time to have three courses, enjoy the beautiful ambiance, and our delicious food. This worked out even better than I could have hoped for
I booked the Five because of good reviews. In short the server was very young, and acted it.She had not been trained on how to open a bottle of wine. She did not know how to pour wine. Our reservation was for pm, and only after we ordered a first course, and had the wine, did the server tell us that the kitchen closes at and we had to order the entire order now.Still being a good sport, we ordered. Of course, all the food came at once, and did not haveroom on our table. The food was just ok. The french fries were old. For this lovely restaurantsake, I hope this was a rare event. They should train their staff better. This server girl wasprobably trained in a low end fast food place and has not elevated her skill yet.She also didnot have good manners. The decor of the restaurant, the table layout, lovely. I would give it a second chance someday
As Five transitions to a Mediterranean concept, diners reflect on their experiences, revealing a tapestry of highs and lows. While the ambiance and decor received praise, inconsistencies in service and food quality emerged as common themes. Some noted friendly staff but highlighted a lack of training, particularly in wine service and communication about kitchen hours. The food, although occasionally delicious—especially the cookies—was often deemed mediocre, with complaints of over-seasoning and unappetizing fries. Despite these challenges, loyal patrons express hope for the future, eager to see what the revamped restaurant will bring when it reopens.
