Good. The bar is affordable. I would not say it is even on the top 20 restaurants I enjoy in The Bay. Definitely good though and Alice Waters is a legend. Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $100+

Food was incredible, but probably the worst service I’ve ever received at a restaurant this reputable. It was obvious that the server thought that my partner and I (early 30s, not from the Berkeley 1% did not belong and made sure we knew it. The food was great, but the experience was ruined. This restaurant is resting on their laurels. When we arrived for an 8:15pm reservation, the small entrance was clustered with many people standing around waiting. Reception was present, but not very welcoming. We sat down and there was a menu at our place settings. There are three courses served to everyone each night, and everyone gets the same thing. My husband was more familiar with this restaurant than me, so he was familiar with this. But I was not. Nobody every explained that like, welcome to Chez Panisse, this is how our menu works, you can choose drink pairings or order by the glass, yada yada. Nothing like that happened. The menu price was $135 for three courses a salad, a main dish, and a dessert. Portion sizes were perfect in my opinion. Not too big, and not tiny. Food was yummy, with exception to the bread which was hard to tear apart to eat and created a crumbly mess on the table. The bread is not good. When we were finished with our three courses, they did bring some little mignardises. And then they brought the check without us asking for it. They do state on the menu that a 17% service charge is automatically added to the bill. But it would be easy not to realize that when they present the check for signature, as they're is just a tip line with no reference to the tip that is already included. Our reservation was at 8:15, and we left at 9:40. It felt crowded, rushed along, like we were part of an assembly line. When I went to the restroom (which is in the kitchen neat to see the kitchen), employees chatted among themselves without acknowledging me or directing me to the restroom. Overall, this experience fell flat for the price point. People would never pay for what it actually is without the nostalgia and name behind the brand. Feels like they're resting on their laurels. Bill was $454 for two people. Would not return or recommend unless you are a huge Alice Waters fan and you want to experience Chez Panisse for the sake of nostalgia history. Or if money is no object to you whatsoever. In that case, sure check it out. Food: 5 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 3 Price per person: $100+
