Maxi's - York
Maxi's
Description
Recent visits to the restaurant have raised concerns about potential cost-cutting measures, as some dishes seemed lower in quality and higher in price. Some guests were disappointed by overly onion-filled dishes and watery sauces, while others found the duck dish to be dry and salty. Despite these negative experiences, many diners still praise the authenticity and value of the food, with some returning multiple times for the great ambience and friendly service. However, a few guests were put off by what they perceived as unwelcoming treatment from staff. Overall, opinions on the restaurant are mixed, with some raving about delicious food and fantastic service, while others were left feeling disappointed and unwelcome.

Our visit to Maxi’s Chinese Restaurant was a nightmare. The staff misled us about the pricing of our meal, then refused to take responsibility when we noticed the discrepancy. Even worse, we found a hair in our food, which they dismissed without a proper apology. The rudeness and lack of concern from the staff were unbelievable. We lodged a formal complaint, but it was clear they had no intention of addressing it, as they completely ignored our final correspondence. This place is deceptive, unclean, and unprofessional. I would strongly advise against dining here if you want a decent experience.
We used the takeaway service, our son lives nearby and it was our treat for us to eat together as his partner and baby were away. As I was a little early for our pickup I sat in the bar area, the place was not overly busy but from what I saw I thought I’d quite like to eat in next time. Once at my sons we all tucked in, the food was amazing, me and hubby have never had fried rice like this one, I know my son kept going on about it well he’s right it’s just the best ever. All the food was second to none and as for the HUGE bag of prawn crackers think I could have fed the whole of North Yorkshire. Sad me and hubby live about a 49 minute drive away, can’t wait to come back. I will say it’s far from cheap for a takeaway but we’ll worth it.
Used to come here frequently and haven’t been for a couple of years, clearly changed hands and the experience was awful. Food was average but the worst thing was the service and pressure to leave before closing. The place is advertised as closing at 10pm, we had people moping the floor around us at 9pm and we were asked if we needed a taxi at 9.20pm. Upon leaving one member of staff commented ‘I thought they’d never leave’ at 9.30pm a whole 30 mins before they were due to shut, Won’t be back in a rush.
Really disappointed with our very short visit to Maxis. Having been a regular customer many years ago I was excited to take a friend there for his evening meal. We drove from Leeds. We arrived at 8.10, aware that the restaurant was due to close at 10pm. When we arrived we were told that the kitchen was shutting at nine, which was fair, but still gave us plenty of time to choose dishes. However, the waiter very brusquely pointed at a menu the size of a broadsheet newspaper and told us we couldn’t order some dishes. It wasn’t clear. When he then came to take our order, he seemed frustrated we have misunderstood his instructions and became quite short with us. We decided to leave, having been made to feel both unwelcome and stupid for not understanding the very vague instructions. A genuine disappointment because the food was always delicious way back when.
