The Red Fox
Description
The Red Fox has become a popular dining spot, celebrated for its lovely ambiance and attentive service, particularly praised for its fresh and well-prepared dishes. However, recent visits reveal a troubling trend: inconsistency in food quality and portion sizes. While some diners rave about standout meals like ribeye steak and seafood, others report disappointing dishes, slow service, and inadequately cooked vegetables. Concerns over health protocols and varying dining experiences have also surfaced, suggesting a decline in the restaurant's previously high standards. Guests are left hoping for improvements and a return to The Red Fox’s former glory.

I ordered the fishcakes as my main course, opting for the smaller portion. Despite being advertised as a main meal priced at £11, I was surprised to receive only one small fishcake and a couple of spring onions - definitely not enough for a satisfying meal. I felt disappointed and disappointed with the portion size and the price. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this restaurant, unless you don't mind leaving hungry.
The food at The Red Fox is delightful and the service is excellent. The restaurant is situated in a charming location with plenty of outdoor seating. The calamari and pate starters are delicious. The seabass and cod main dishes are also good, but the roast dinner is a bit ordinary. The desserts are really enjoyable, especially the option to have a mini dessert with a coffee.
The restaurant had a beautiful atmosphere, with a clean and relaxed setting. The food was incredible, with a wide variety of beers to choose from. The service was top-notch, and the restroom facilities were also lovely.
Booked a table a week in advance as this was a special meal for my husband 's 74th birthday. I specified where we would like to be seated and explained that it was a special 'do '. We have eaten here twice during lockdown and it was excellent. We always have wine beer followed by 2 prawn cocktails,2 seabass,2 desserts followed by 2 coffees. So good that I passed word around to family and friends. The day before we got a message so that we could confirm everything and again I explained that it was a special meal and where we would like to be seated. We excitedly walked up the steps and had no idea what we were supposed to do hung around a bit and no one came up to us. I walked over to a waitress who was by the computer and I said that we had a table booked. She said 'go to the bar they will see to you '. Went to the bar and joined a bit of a queue (surely there should be someone available to meet and greet customers as they arrive??? Others gave their name and were taken presumably to their booked table. I gave our name and he checked his list he asked for our name again then said 'just a minute ' and he went off somewhere. He came back and said follow me and took us to the left of the bar to a place where we weren 't expecting. He cleared a table that was set for 6 people and we sat down.We were already feeling uncomfortable this room was definitely NOT where we wanted to be it had no atmosphere whatsoever. We ordered drinks. then waitress came and we ordered our usual 2 P Cs and 2 seabass so far OK. then she came back and said 'oh I forgot we have no seabass '. OMG I didn 't know what to do I felt like let 's get out of here but at the same time I thought that we would not get in any other decent restaurant (1st night of no restrictions etc) Absolutely nothing else on the menu appealed to us but in the end my husband went for the fish cakes with salad I really didn 't fancy anything so I asked if I could have the salmon pasta starter dish as a main course. portion of chunky chips. My husband has never in his life said that a meal was 'awful and tasteless ' He really is very easily pleased. his fish cakes with small bit of salad he said he could do better himself and he has never cooked anything in his life! Mine was actually 2 pieces of pasta (tortellini) filled with a horrible tasteless filling supposed to be salmon with a very thin watery tasteless sauce. Things were going from bad to worse. We didn 't bother with dessert or coffee as nothing could make this special night better.I felt so sorry for my husband and I have promised to take him somewhere else this weekend to make up for this disaster of an evening at the Red Fox.This was not cheap so I really don 't know what has happened to the normally very good Red Fox restaurant. Has it changed hands? Has the head chef moved on? Something definitely not right.I left a similar review on the Red Fox website but they have chosen to not bother getting back to me that says it all as far as I am concerned. I had promised to bring my daughter here for a 'special ' meal after she has finished her cancer treatments (radio and chemotherapy) butI can not risk this happening again . I normally do take photos of the meals that we have had here these meals were so poor that I didn 't take any photos. My husband even said that we would have had a better meal in Macdonalds!! We have never been there but I 'm sure he is right.
As a family we visited the Red Fox tonight to celebrate my mother in law’s 85th birthday. Table booked for 6.45, for a party of five. Things started badly when the waitress asked if we would like to order drinks and I asked for a few minutes, as not all the party had arrived. From then on all eye contact from the server was avoided. We had to ask for drinks after we had been sat there for about 15 minutes. The order was taken as a matter of course, with no interaction between server and customer. Again had to ask for food order to be taken, no interaction. Wrong food brought and the meal that was missing was the birthday girls!! Replacement was brought quickly. After this point the server became much more attentive, apologised for mistake we can all make them. My main objection was the attitude with which we were served it cast a real atmosphere over the party, which should have been a celebration. We have eaten at the Red Fox for many years and we’re really disappointed with the service we received on this occasion. Hopefully this is a one off as we are eating there again in two weeks for another celebration!!
