Van Der Brew - Winthrop
Van Der Brew
Description
A lively lakefront microbrewery offers an impressive rotating selection of small-batch beers, live music, cornhole and darts, indoor/outdoor seating, a dog‑friendly sunlit deck and free popcorn. Friendly staff and a welcoming brewmaster host trivia and open‑mic nights; affordable pours, flights and on‑site food trucks (or BYO/delivery) make it a favorite for locals, boaters and visitors.
Occasional gaps between advertised and on‑tap styles — pilsners and wheats aren’t always available — and the absence of a full kitchen mean guests often rely on food trucks or deliveries.

Great atmosphere and facility, but the beer and staff are mediocre. Good excuse to get out and enjoy some beer with friends, but don't hold your breath for blow-you-out-of-the-water pours. Grateful Grain (15min down the road) is on a completelydifferent level of quality.
If you're looking for everything you want in a craft brew tasting room at reasonable prices, look no further! Located near the shores of Maranacook Lake, Van der Brew is a hidden gem in Winthrop. Once a feed store, the space is spacious and inviting, complete with cornhole and other table games to enjoy. The sunlit outdoor deck is dog-friendly, making it a favorite spot for locals. Van der Brew features a wide array of small-batch beers, all priced at $7 per glass. You can also order growlers, flights, soda, coffee, and water. And don’t forget the free popcorn that perfectly complements your drink—it's buttery and salty, just the way we like it! During my visit, it was open mic night, and I tried the Dublin Rose, an Irish Red that seemed to be quite popular. It was smooth, cold, and very easy to drink. While I stuck with the Red, they also had a Kölsch, pilsner, porter, IPA, DIPA, and a pale ale called Maranacook Moe. The atmosphere was lively, with a high school reunion happening as well—a testament to the spacious layout, which is perfect for gatherings. I especially loved the area designated for live music, which hosts a variety of local talent. You can check the music lineup posted at the bar. Outside, you'll find the Freedom's Forage food truck serving fresh, sustainably sourced pub fare. The outdoor eating area is fantastic, featuring long tables, ample shade, and stunning views of the lake. I ordered the southwestern chicken wrap, which was bursting with fresh flavors, lots of crunch, and perfectly seasoned—it paired wonderfully with my red beer. I highly recommend a visit to Van der Brew for a delightful experience with local craft beers. Chat with the friendly brewmaster, snack on some popcorn, and soak in the beauty of this local treasure. Better yet, grab a friend with a boat and sail on over!
The staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was intriguing. The beer was average. It's a good stop along the Maine beer trail.
Very disappointed. The website clearly stated they offered a Pilsner and a wheat beer. I arrived with friends, only to find they had nothing but IPAs, stouts, and nut brown ale. The only saving points were the food and the live music.
