Reviews summary
Nestled in Westmount, Ryu offers a captivating ambiance complemented by delightful service, making it an appealing destination for sushi lovers. The fish quality is exceptional, and the innovative dishes shine through each meticulously prepared course, particularly in their omakase tasting menu. While some appetizers, like the miso soup and edamame, missed the mark, sushi remains the star, boasting vibrant flavors and creative presentations. Pricing may be steep, with cocktails and wine servings leaving room for improvement, yet the restaurant's overall experience promises memorable dining. Ryu is a worthy choice for special occasions and discerning palates.
Was Anonym at Ryu a mag?
The sushi is priced based on the distance the raw fish travels from Japan. They don’t serve traditional fried tempura here; in fact, nothing is fried at all. It costs around $6 for a bowl, offering a unique experience to enjoy the decor and appreciate the service. However, I personally prefer more traditional options that come with a lower price point. What Anonym dislikes about Ryu:
Ryu, located on Ste-Catherine Street in Westmount, just opened today. I first discovered their peel stand earlier this summer through a Yelp review and was impressed. View all feedback.

OpenTable took our reservation for Ryu Westmount and charged us $75 to Make rez. We received confirming email from the resto and OpenTable. When we arrived at Ryu, the place was closed and had been for days. When we called, we got another Ryu branch (it’s a chain) who were unhelpful and hung up on us. Since they are closed but will still take your reservation fee, I cannot recommend.
Restaurant was not open even though I was able to book it on Open table. Showed up on time for my reservation and the sign on the door read closed for emergency remodelling. Upset that the restaurant didn’t update their open table status and the fact you could book a closed restaurant. Waste of my time.
The food was excellent. Our waiter gave us each an alcohol free cucumber and mint shot. The edamame was delicious drizzled with a coating of sesame oil with seeds. We sat at the bar and enjoyed watching the bar drinks being made. Highly recommend!!
We absolutely loved the food and service and the fact that we could sit outside! Great evening and would come back for sure.
The quality of the fish is amazing. The service wasn’t great new staff and they didn’t know the menu very well. They advertise a wine or sake pairing but they don’t have one.

I was able to make a reservation on OpenTable but when I got there, the restaurant was closed. A sign on the door says it is temporarily closed for emergency remodeling or repairs and it tells you to go to one of their other locations. Something to that effect. Really frustrating.

Ryu never misses. This was my first time at the Westmount location and the Omakase for two was perfect. Great variety of quality sushi. Also tried their uni from Hokkaido and it was to die for! Their house drinks are fun and STRONG. Excellent service andambiance, would recommend!!
The ambiance and decor are really nice, vibe is good, staff are very friendly and attentive. The miso soup was quite salty and the tofu wasn’t soft. Not much to it so I would suggest to skip it. As well the seaweed salad was really boring, not muchflavour or seaweed. It looked beautiful but the dressing was off or lacking some needed vinegar punch to balance the sour ofthe green papaya. Again I would suggest skip it and focus on the sushi. The sushi was excellent, but again I can only give 3stars as they were out of tuna (or was being reserved for a special roll that we could not eat due to dietary restrictions).Overall I would say this was not great considering it’s quite pricier than other places. I will try again though…
The sushi comes with a price tag that matches the distance the raw fish must travel from Japan. They don’t do traditional tempura fried .Nothing is fried here. Miso $6 a bowl. An experience to savor the decor and appreciate the service though mypreference is a traditional choice with a lesser price tag on the cuisine.
Ryu has to be one of the gold standars for Sushi in Montreal. What I really liked about the Ste-Catherine st. location apart from the great sushi is the ambiance, it 's a relaxed ambiance, their other locations seem to be more lively . Had somewonderful sushi, salmon, shrimp, tuna, all very fresh. Drinks were nice and strong, try the margarita. The service was superattentive and welcoming
One of our fave places to dine. Although on the pricier side, the food and ambiance are worth it. The staff is very friendly and professional. We had them pick for our table and we were very happy with the choices. Overall, we loved the makis, thesashimis and the truffle shiitake roll. Would come back and recommend.

Food was pretty good; they offer torched sushi that's tasty. Fish tasted fresh. I did find the rolls with the quinoa topping a little off putting. While it was crunchy and some points, other bits are hard and just get jammed in your teeth instead. The service on the other hand was a huge miss. I don't think I've ever received so much sass from our waitress in my life!! We all have bad days but I don't think taking it out on your customers when they are asking simple questions about the menu is the way to go. The decor was nice. We had a booth seat and I found the couch part to be a little low and uncomfortable. Music was super loud and bass-y which made it difficult to hold a conversation with your friends at the table. I would return maybe in the future but there are better spots out there in the city.
Im quite conflicted about this since the food is worth it but not the rest.. we took the Omakase service for two and one of the cheaper bottles. cost me around 400$ for two. the food was awesome, fresh, interesting, and creative. super well presented and executed. the issue for me was more about the ambiance and the level of service for this price point. the reservations are not real reservations. They just offer you whatever table when you arrive, not even great ones. the staff are kind but are dressed more casualy. no special touch... sadly, they completely miss that touch that would make such an experience worth the price, and that would not cost them that much. Sadly... the ambiance is also not great. the decor is amazing, but that 's it. the music was way too fast pasted and loud for a dégustation it was probably some house lounge type of music. i would expect something way way more relaxed. the music made me feel that it was rushing me to eat. So if you have so much money and are just going for the food. this will be great for you. but for anyone that is financially normal going there for a special occasion, this might not be for a good place for an enjoyable evening. i hope the restaurant will improve, but i can 't afford to take another chance. sorry and good luck
Sublime food, beautifully presented. We had the Chef's taster menu, which I can highly recommend. The Shirley Temple cocktail rivals the best of any alcoholic cocktail . Wines carefully curated so a really good, if limited choice available. Four stars for Service as we were forgotten at the end and had to hunt someone down to get our mint tea. A meal to remember
Got the set course and it was amazing and we left full! Everything was beautiful and delicious. The coconut mochi was surprisingly return worthy.
If you're a fan of sushi and seeking a place that serves fresh and delectable options, this restaurant is certainly worth considering. The sushi here is among the freshest and most flavorful I've ever had. Each piece is made with great care and precision, and the mix of flavors is simply delightful. The service is also excellent, with a friendly and attentive staff who are always ready to assist and answer questions. The restaurant's atmosphere is inviting, featuring modern and elegant decor that enhances the dining experience. However, the main drawback is the pricing. The costs here are quite high, making it less suitable for those on a budget. While the quality of the food and service is exceptional, the prices can be quite a surprise. Overall, if you're willing to splurge, this sushi restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

The food was excellent. Our waiter gave us every alcohol free gurke and mint shot. The edamame was delicious with a coating of sesame oil with seeds. We sat at the bar and saw the bar made drinks. Very recommended!!
Perfect place for a quiet night in the middle of the week. The food was delicious and the ginzu among my fave cocktails.
The seats at the counter were a bit awkward. Next time, I would choose to sit at a table instead of sitting in front of the chefs. The omakase experience was really nice, as every course was a surprise.
Valentine’s Day visit. They brought out all the courses so quickly (each before we had finished the previous) and I told one of the servers to slow down, that they were making me feel that they wanted to rush us out to turn the table. After we finished, and they had cleared, we then waited nearly 30 minutes to be asked if we wanted dessert/coffee. Edamame undercooked Salads overdressed but good Miso soup delicious! Kamikaze handrolls slightly fishy Sashimi Rolls delicious! Sashimi platter delicious! Hamachi Baby very good Mr Maguro very good Dessert lava cake was more like a soft lukewarm cupcake rather than a molten and runny. All sushi presentations very nice
