What Miriam M dislikes about Berto's:
I decided to give this place another try because I really enjoyed the food I had a couple of years ago. However, when I visited recently for the hot table, the staff didn't acknowledge the line of customers waiting, which included about eight others in front of me. The staff seemed disorganized—one lady was taking orders while also preparing food for dine-in customers. They might have been short-staffed. The food was... View all feedback.
I was truly amazed by the variety and flavor of the menu. From the very first bite—WOW! I had no idea this hidden gem was here!
When we asked when the side soup would be ready, the owner or manager stated it would be available soon. We suggested that since the soup was not ready, they should consider substituting it, but he refused. We informed him that they should be prepared at opening time; if not, they should either offer a substitute or reduce the price since the soup is part of the combo meal. Instead of accommodating us, he chose to argue and seemed unwilling to satisfy customers. As a food service supervisor myself, I understand the importance of going above and beyond for customer satisfaction. We never argue with our customers; if an item is missing from the menu, we try to offer an alternative to ensure our clients leave happy. In this situation, coffee would have been an acceptable substitute. Most restaurants are willing to make compromises, but not Berto's. The owner or manager didn’t even offer an apology, which would have gone a long way in making us feel better about the situation. When our silogs finally arrived, they were served with sinigang broth. One of the silogs, the porkchopsilog, was overly salty, while the other was dry and tough. For the price of $11.99 plus tax, it simply was not worth it. Overall, it was a stressful and disappointing breakfast experience—my worst at a Filipino restaurant. We will not be returning to Berto's again.
My husband returned at the designated pickup time, and we saw people waiting in line for 1 to 2 hours. I should have advised him to cancel the order, but he patiently waited. After over an hour, we finally received our food. As we sat down to enjoy our Christmas Eve dinner, the Roast Beef was incredibly disappointing. It didn't taste the same as before— it was gummy and served in a soupy sauce. The amount of meat was also insufficient. I will never order from here again. My advice to the restaurant: please maintain the quality, portion sizes, and timing. Many customers were left unsatisfied yesterday and deserve refunds. I would rate this experience not one star, but zero (0) stars!
As reviewed on Yelp on August 22, 2022: Berto's never fails to impress us! My friends take me here every year when I visit. Their breakfast is consistently delicious, and the halo halo is absolutely worth the journey from Hamilton. Although their selection of hot food isn't extensive, they offer all the classic dishes we look forward to!
For the dinner dishes, I would rate them 4/5. I tried the squid, which was pleasant; the seasoning was fairly standard, allowing the squid's natural flavor to come through. While it may have lacked complexity, it was still enjoyable if you appreciate the combination of soy sauce and squid with a hint of acidity. The other dish was a beef stew with tomato sauce and vegetables—I can't recall its name, but the flavors blended nicely, and the beef was tender. I would definitely order that again if given the chance! For dessert, I opted for the Halo Halo and would rate it 4/5. The flan on top was delicious, creamy, and smooth, but I was advised to mix everything together. Honestly, I could have happily just eaten the flan! The ube ice cream had a lovely coconut flavor, with subtle hints of ube. It was on the sweeter side, but not overwhelming. The jackfruit pieces added excellent texture, and the beans at the bottom provided a nice balance. Overall, it was a well-priced and visually appealing dish, perfect for photos! In conclusion, I would definitely return for a quick, budget-friendly meal. It's great value for the price, and my Filipino friend approves! I can't wait to try their kamayan next time!
