Christophers is an institution! Greek cakes and pastries..... and pies, and coffee. So good rarely does the box of goodies make it to their destination without at least one pastry missing. It is that good. Then there is beautiful Peggy big smile, warm...greeting and the perfect person to meet you across the counter while she folds the familiar red cardboard box around a oh so delicious red velvet cake.... bliss. What Renee Hackett doesn't like about Christopher's Cake Shop:
They have many options on cookies and cakes. The cookies are yummy and freshly baked. The cakes are good but they are too sweet for me. The mango black tea is good. View all feedback.
Over many years I've taken whole trays of galaktoboureko from Christophers into more office morning/afternoon teas than I can remember, and always to rave reviews. This is a Greek custard slice - just-solid-enough custard under crisp filo pastry. Christophers make the best galaktoboureko in Sydney. Tip: ask for the syrup in a seperate cup, so it stays crisp until people pour on as much/little as they want. You can also get smaller trays to eat at home, or buy it by the slice. Also the best place for the Greek occasion cakes - Tsoureki at Easter and Vasilopita at New Years. If you don't have a huge family buy one anyway & celebrate! Both of these are more like bread than cake, they freeze very well & beat any brioche when they're toasted up.
Old school. 1955 is the year that Disneyland opened and that coke was first sold in a can. It is also the year that Sydney's first Greek cake shop opened. So just think, when you are biting into a piece of baclava from Christopher's cake shop, you're biting into a piece of Sydney history. You can buy your cakes and sweets to go, otherwise there is a little area at the back of the shop where you can sit and soak up the years.

Christopher's Cake Shop - Surry Hills, Sydney. Christopher's Cake Shop is very renowned with Sydney-siders, and with such clear perception why. My dad was moving apartment to elsewhere in Sydney and had been long tempted by the Surry Hills location. Since it might be the last convenient chance he decided to get some. Now I cannot talk about the location, the interior nor the service - just the food; he brought the order up to Queensland. There were three filo pastries in the sampler to try - an Almond Roll, the Cherry & cheese strudel and the Copenhagen. Each one was very good. The Copenhagen was akin to a baklava - a shortbread base with a layer of soft almond covered by filo pastry. It had a honey covering which was really sweet combining with the tartness of the almonds. The almond roll was thin pastry wrapped around an almond mixture. This was also pretty good and less sweet than the other choices. The best one though was the cherry and cheese strudel; with the amalgam of sour taste in cherries with the creaminess of cream cheese making a fantastic filling this was the most tasty and moreish of the selection - probably helped by being more distinctive from the other two. Loving care goes into the products and it shows. If I happen to be passing one of these shops buy I might stop and ponder about going in for an off-the-cuff order.
