Desi Chef - Somerville
Desi Chef
Description
The culinary experience at this restaurant offers a striking contrast, as reviews highlight both remarkable dishes and disappointing choices. While some patrons rave about the sumptuous chicken tikka masala and well-spiced biryani, others report bland or excessively salty dishes like chole bhature and stale aloo bonda. Delivery orders occasionally miss the mark, presenting variations that stray from expectations. Nonetheless, the affordability and freshness of items like samosas and dosa have garnered positive feedback. While some diners embrace the flavors, others caution against certain menu items, making this establishment a gamble worth considering.

Do not border from here unless you want to have Go issues for a week. I ordered chicken biryani and tandoori chicken and it was old chicken that was probably reheated three times. It was dry and hard as cardboard. $40 wasted!
We've gotten takeout from Desi Chef a few times and are absolutely amazed at the flavors and spice levels. We ordered online and the food was always ready when promised, within a minute or two. The pakura batter is a bit thicker than we are used to, but not in a bad way, it has a warm feeling that feels like a hug. The Tikka masala is absolutely on par and just spicy enough to get the average white guy a little sniffly. While the store itself might be a little simple from the outside, everything inside is what counts. The warm hug of amazing cuisine and the endless supply of Indian groceries and spices make an great addition to the variety of cultures Somerville's food scene offers. Please try this place if you like Indian cuisine. Please try this place if you like food. You won't be disappointed. It's a place that definitely belongs on a Food network or travel show.
What a nice surprise, I got the chicken Tikka masala, I looked up places by my job and this popped up and it was amazing. Will go back again to try some different meals.
I ordered dosa and idly and it was good. Price and quantity were amazing. It’s a small Indian grocery store that also makes food. It’s a take out place.
Even though it had a low rating, it was the only place open in the area that had decent prices. I'm glad i decided to give it a chance. We ordered the Chicken Makhani, Chicken 65, Biriyani, and Tadka Daal. Everything was cooked well, and importantly spiced exactly right. The food tasted fresh, and the portions were great. The Chicken Biriyani especially was really good. The place itself is unassuming, i cant speak for the store. But the food is great.
