Visiting Japantown for a few days, in search of shabu shabu and sukiyaki. Super pleased with Shabusen. Clean, well lit and attentive service. The sukiyaki was served with the cotton candy spring cloud a rare touch. High quality rib eye and seafood servings meaty crab legs, jumbo prawn. Generous portions of subtly flavored tempura, entree servings w/greens, mushrooms tofu, and a bowl of ramen noodles. Recommend taking... View all feedback.
What Melissa Navarrete doesn't like about Shabusen Restaurant:
The logistics of how each meal set is done is terrible and they don't use visual common sense. If you have four guests, the meal set only covers for two and they don't even try to cover all four people (sides like the appetiser and rice is all shared between portions given to two guests) but they really live to pile on the dish ware on you. It's just not worth the price for what you're getting and the experience that... View all feedback.
This was my first time doing sukiyaki! Went here with my hubby and we both enjoyed it so much! The food was delicious and the service was really nice! They had Sapporo Premium beer which I suppose is not common and we really like it! One order of sukiyaki is a whole course meal designed for one person. (Meaning it includes an appetizer, then tempura, then the actual sukiyaki with meat and some veggies, after a ramen, and lastly mochi with ice cream for dessert). However we did one for the two of us and then just added more items such as meat, etc. It was super delicious and filling! Would definitely recommend and go again to try the shabu shabu next time!!
Great service and presentation. The tempura is way over-battered, and the wagyu sukiyaki is merely okay- the sugary broth gets in the way of the beef flavor. The ramen broth is tasty but on the salty side. The green tea ice cream was pretty good though.
We got the A5 Wagyu course $90 and the Ribeye course $50 to share. The meal started with a sesame tofu appetizer, which was earthy and light. The courses are served with rice bowls, which we didn't finish because there was so much food. Tempura baskets of 5 items were brought out broccoli, potato, sweet potato, prawn, and carrot . For the shabu-shabu: each course had a plate of cabbage, greens escarole? , and mushrooms. The soup base was a beef bone broth. Green onions and spicy radish were provided so each person could flavor their dipping sauces. The ribeye was a good, meaty cut. After swishing, it took the sesame sauce well. The ponzu sauce also added an acidic bite that was well received. The Wagyu was incredibly delicate. We only needed to briefly swish it in the broth to enjoy. I would even say it was so good, it didn't need any dipping sauce. The courses ended with green tea ice cream with strawberries and a light drizzle of honey ? .
Shabusen has just reopened with a new menu. The menu is small for now and it sounds like they will add on. Current options are a set menu of wagyu, prime rib or veg starting at $50 and also a $9 kids menu. We went for the prime rib set menu that included a sesame tofu starter, tempura starter and ramen to finish the meal. It was delicious and a good value. I’m so excited that shabusen is serving this niche of a better quality, higher end shabu restaurant like in Japan that takes pride in ingredients and preparations. I look forward to returning!
They recently?Re-opened with updated menu. Its still shabu shabu sukiyaki but now a course menu. We honestly didn't think we'd be treated so well! We walked in at 5 without reservation, got seated at the bar(we actually preferred this The sesame tofu is so good I can tell it was house made. The sukiyaki now has cotton candy sugar? which was interesting. The broth sauce was a little salty for me but its sukiyaki so still good. You also get fresh tempura(so many pieces . Then also a separate ramen per person. We were too full so the server kindly prepared them as to-go. (We ate them at home and the broth was so good also Finally a good greentea icecream with mochi (this mochi was also not like a frozen mochi from the store either. It was authentic Great service amazing food~ we are glad we came back after re-opening. :
