On recommendation we booked lunch in L'Epee on a rainy October day and, despite the loneliness between car and restaurant, the meal has looked up to us! The 32 Euro Set menu had 3 or 4 choices for each course, with a reasonable variety and we especially enjoyed the fish/seafood dishes. Menu only in French and wait staff not to speak much English, so, despite the use of an online translation app, a few of our choices turned out not to be exactly what we thought, although the shell marigold starter was very good and probably better than Potted shrimp we had expected! The Carte des vin was OK with a few wines through the glass and quite fair value. Service was perfect when slightly irritating, but the staff did their best to communicate through a combination of pigeons English and our rustic French. Overall worth a visit.
We both had the menu gastronomic and the 6 dishes we tried between us, we couldn't be mistaken. they were all charming, well balanced and beautifully presented. the personal was friendly and attentive. my only mild criticism would have been that it might have been a few minutes to relax between the main and dessert. we had a nice evening and it was a nice tasty egg.
It was surprising in Quimper how few restaurants were open at Sunday lunchtime, when everywhere else in France a Sunday is when the whole family goes out to lunch. So we ended up here, despite the mixed reviews. We were firstly very disappointed in the...interior, which, for a historic interior, has been vandalised. Naff in the extreme. The canopy on the outside is the only thing that is remaining of this restaurant’s historic heritage. A tragedy. The food was not good. My husband’s lamb was not cooked as he had asked it to be, and was sent back, came back, and was still inedible: tough and flavourless. My sea food linguine was a travesty: the pasta over cooked and floury, the seafood over cooked and flavourless, the sauce bland. We have had so many good meals in Brittany, but this was so disappointing!
We started with aperitifs; Campari and beer. However we were so absorbed with listening to the cricket, world final England v New Zealand it was difficult to concentrate on the menu and the meal. We had Oeuf cocotte tradition, crème au lard et champignons, Ceviche...de Thon followed by Salade gourmande (oignons, oeufs pochés, gésiers de canard confits, copeaux de foie gras) Salade de Chèvre (salade, tomates confites, poitrines fumées, toasts de chèvres) and a bottle of Saumur Champigny.
Open Sunday, and despite service (which started out fine, then got disinterested), the food was outstanding (even if I wasn’t sure entirely what I was ordering). I had some mixed shellfish, clams and mussels, in the shell and served in pot with the tastiest thick...broth/sauce, then seared tuna with sesame and delicious mixed vegetable, a lovely lemon tarte, sort of like lemon shortcake with chiffon and meringue adorning. Highly recommended.
