The owner is a great character and a great chef and the pub is a traditional old Kilmarnock pub beautifully restored...demonstrated by his presentation of French style food every now and then. Pop up French restaurant is terrific. Steak Diane cooked at the table was very impressive. Wine to accompany was reasonably priced and of very good quality. not the 'usual ' Shiraz or Merlot you find in pubs. Nice Cotes du Rhone was great with my steak. This is also a great pub with not only a good choice of gins but a choice of tonics too.
We go here regularly for the food, as we are not drinkers. It's been excellent every time, I wish I could make soup as they do, and it's proper food prepared fresh everytime. If you are like me and hate bones in fish, go for their breaded haddock with proper tattie chips, it's terrific and not a bone in sight. We even had our formal wedding meal here with our family, some of which live over 60 miles away, and have revisited since on their own! Tremendous. In our experience there is no difference in the quality or speed regardless of who is chef that day, contrary to other reviews.
Fanny by Gaslight is a local landmark. A great old Victorian 'proper old fashioned pub, with original features which hosts great live music gigs, events, charity days, open mic, battle of the band contests, theme nights and quizzes. Always a great atmosphere, the new manager has brought the toilets and facilities into the 21st century creating a fabulous venue for young and old. The food is fantastic, bringing a modern twist to old pub classics, everything is freshly prepared from scratch in house, the twice cooked chunky chips with truffle oil and fresh parmesan are outstanding! The menu changes with the seasons to ensure value for money and optimum freshness. The staff are a nice friendly bunch.
