Dropped in for a quick snack a couple of days ago. Had passed by a couple of nights earlier on my way to another restaurant for dinner and thought that "I must try that!".Only ordered a cheesy fries and coffee. Service was good and the coffee and chips arrived promptly. The chips were very good. Cheesy salt and a delicious mayonnaise on top. Real chips, hand-cut. Not the usual frozen mass produced type. What Beatrice Kautzer doesn't like about The Chippery & Co:
Was not thrilled with the portion sizes compared to my first visit. The $7.50 side of fish option added to our Belgian Chips was barely three-quarters the palm of my hands. However, the grilled and battered fish we ordered were quite tasty.Handcut chips was alright in a large serve but there is definitely not enough topping for the entire cone. I stopped by this restaurant a few days ago for a quick snack. I had passed by it on my way to another restaurant for dinner and decided to give it a try. I ordered fries and coffee. The service was quick and friendly. The fries and coffee were served promptly. The fries were delicious, topped with cheese, salt, and a tasty mayonnaise. They were clearly hand-cut and not the usual frozen variety. I would like to return and try something more substantial from their interesting menu.
We ordered takeout for lunch at work. The food was a bit cold by the time it arrived at the office, but still tasted good. I had the loaded potato and it was better when it was hot and fresh. The portion size was a bit small in my opinion. We sat in the back corner of the restaurant, right under the loudspeakers playing music loudly, making it hard to hear each other. There were outdoor seating options, but it was too cold when we left to sit outside. It would have been more comfortable and easier to talk if we had sat outside. The staff was very friendly and welcoming.
Not the healthiest option but a delightful treat especially as the chips were very different from the usual bulk frozen ones. We tried the Belgium Chip Cone with an added serve of grilled fish and the Fish and Chip Cone. The serve of chips was...very generous and 1 between 2 of us would have been fine as even my husband could not finish his entire serve. The tartare sauce served with the fish /chip cone was delicious but was only on the top layer so you really do need extra bowls of dipping sauce. The attentive waiter did come and ask if we wanted more sauce but I was not sure if this meant paying an extra $4 per bowl so declined as we did already have bowls of the equally delicious curry sauce and Belgium mayo (should have asked of course). The serve of fish with this cone was very small but the batter was crisp and golden while the fish was fresh tasting and moist. fish and less chips would have been better. The Belgium cone with its mix of mayo and curry sauce as well as diced onion and flavored salt is delicious but, again, the sauce is on top and you are soon left with just plain chips unless you tip them onto a plate or get more sauce. The grilled fish was perfectly cooked, moist and full of flavor. Service was prompt and efficient and we appreciated the help yourself water with slices of lemon.
The Chippery in William Street in the back part of an old bank building – still retaining the Chubb safe-room where once upon a time all the goodies were locked away – is a gourmet fish and chip shop catering for take-away and dine in...– the latter in a tiny space of around five tables, as well as a pretty set up in the aforementioned safe room with seating for 4 or so more at an aquarium table. There is also a couple of high tables and stools out front for a spot of al fresco dining. It is unlicensed – no room to store alcohol anyway – but quick to produce good quality stemless wine glasses and ice buckets where required. The menu, of course, is fishy – fish and chips, salt and pepper squid, chilli crab, oysters, burgers, tacos and chips. We kicked off with a cone of hot chips, with habanero salt, and slathered with jalapeno sauce and chopped jalapenos. Big serve – one more than enough for two – hot, crisp chips, creamy dressing pimped up with the chilli, very good. They also turn out similar cones of chips with parmesan and truffle shavings; Belgian style with curry ketchup and mayo; and cheesy chips with parmesan, mayo and black lava salt. Will be back to try them all for sure. Onto our mains – first off, peri peri prawns – a generous serve of well-cooked prawns, served with their tails, sweetly fleshed and firm, mildly spiced peri peri sauce, accompanied by salad, rocket, shaved fennel, olives and an abundance of roasted pine nuts. Nice. Then a couple of soft tacos – filled with chopped red cabbage, charred corn salsa and the star of the show, crumbed whiting fillets – crisp skin, inside moist and tender, with a mildly spiced sriracha infused mayo. These were very good. So, the Chippery and Co. is one out check out for sure – very pleasant waiters, service was prompt and friendly, and the food of good quality. I will definitely be back.
Was not thrilled with the portion sizes compared to my first visit. The $7.50 side of fish option added to our Belgian Chips was barely three quarters the palm of my hands. However, the grilled and battered fish we ordered were quite tasty. Handcut chips was...alright in a large serve but there is definitely not enough topping for the entire cone. I would say the Truffle Chips was much more appetising than the Belgian Chips and worth a try. Other mentions: Lovely service. Small cozy venue with limited seating. Overall, would not be rushing back.
