Hellriegel's Inn - Painesville
Hellriegel's Inn
Description
Nestled on the east side of Cleveland, this nostalgic restaurant promises a unique dining experience, noted for its impressive Prime Rib and Filet, alongside delightful Ranch potatoes. While some patrons enjoy the warm atmosphere and attentive service, others express disappointment in food quality and service inconsistencies during busy events like Thanksgiving and holiday buffets. While prices may lean towards the higher end, many guests appreciate the generous portions and classic offerings. However, some recent diners find the food lacking in flavor and warmth. Despite mixed reviews, the charm of the venue and its long-standing reputation draw both new and returning visitors.

Awful experience. I rarely write restaurant reviews, but the Thanksgiving buffet at Hellriegel's Inn was a huge letdown. We definitely won't be coming back!
After 75 years in operation, Hellriegel's Inn continues to serve excellent food. I enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner there last night and was impressed by the rich flavors and taste. The only minor drawback was that the food could have been served a little warmer. I've heard their Sunday brunch is outstanding, so I’m eager to try it soon. Kristina in reservations was wonderful and managed to accommodate our larger group just a day before the holiday.
This place feels nostalgic, and I absolutely love it. Instead of trying to describe the atmosphere, I suggest you just visit one evening. I hadn’t eaten here before, but the servers were fantastic and the bar had a delightful charm. UPDATE: I’ve now had the chance to dine here. We were a group of five on the outdoor patio. We enjoyed cocktails and dinner, and our server was exceptional. The cocktails were amazing, and each of us truly relished our meals. I must say, the presence of my 21-year-old daughter and her boyfriend probably brought down the average age of the clientele by a good decade, but they enjoyed themselves as well.
I attended this restaurant's Thanksgiving buffet and found the experience lacking. The service was subpar, and our server appeared overwhelmed; we often had to look for her to get things like drink refills or rolls. Additionally, our table was missing butter for the rolls. The turkey was a bit tough—not dry, but definitely chewy. Surprisingly, even the mashed potatoes seemed to be a struggle for the kitchen, despite the restaurant knowing how many guests they had due to reservations. At $32.95 per plate (not including drinks), my family and I left feeling quite disappointed. It's unlikely that we will return in the future.
My family and I went to the Easter buffet at 3 PM with a total of ten people in our group. We were seated promptly, and our server came over right away to take our drink orders. So far, everything was going well, and I was impressed by the staff's attentiveness. We all decided to go for the buffet, priced at $31.95 per person, which included non-alcoholic beverages—a nice touch since we don’t drink alcohol. We received our sodas in small plastic cups that we finished in nearly one sip, leaving us wondering if we would ever get a refill. I had ginger ale and asked for a refill, but unfortunately, I never received it. Now, let's talk about the buffet, which sounded far better than it appeared. The food was being served by staff, which I understand, but it was cold. The mashed potatoes were real but completely lacking in flavor, the green beans almandine were mushy, the penne with marinara was dry and stuck together, and the chicken marsala was the only dish worthy of being eaten—it was quite flavorful. The deviled eggs were at room temperature, the eggs Florentine bake was burnt on the bottom and adhered to the pan, the ham was just standard buffet ham (which is hard to mess up), and the prime rib was cut so thick that it was chewy, even with au jus, it didn’t improve much. While there were butter packets on our table, there were no rolls, biscuits, or any sort of bread available. My 84-year-old grandmother asked for some bread and was informed that the buffet didn’t include bread, but since many people had been asking, the server would bring a few rolls. While we appreciated that, it would have been nice if she had brought enough for the entire table instead of making it feel like a big favor for my grandma. For dessert, there were two à la carte options: carrot cake or banana cream pie, both priced at $6.95. My husband and our 10-year-old son ordered the carrot cake, while I chose the banana cream pie. The cake was dry and quite small, and my pie...
