Genji Japanese Restaurant - Ottawa

It gives the feel of small Japanese restaurant you would come across in the rural part of Japan. The food is delicious and the service was also awesome. I recommend.Kid-friendliness: Note that they do not have a changing table for babies in any of their toilets. There is also no option for babe food, so plan ahead.Parking: Depending on the day and time, the street parking is either free or you need to pay for it! Additionally, it is pretty hard to find parking right next to the restaurants. If you are unlucky, you might want to consider a 5-8min walk from the restaurant to find appropriate parking.

In 2018, my wife and I got engaged and decided to celebrate at Genji. It was an amazing meal and a delightful dining experience. In 2023, we traveled from Montreal to Ottawa to return to the restaurant, as we had such fond memories. I am happy to report that the food, service, and overall experience was just as fantastic as we remembered. I highly recommend it.

Arriving in Ottawa late, we looked for a restaurant on the fly around 21h on a weekday. We were pleasantly surprised with the Genji restaurant which served us a selection of Gyozas and Sushis: excellent quality and taste, the service was simple but effective and the price reasonable. A restaurant I would recommend to friends and family.

I believe that the sushi at this restaurant is on par with average sushi you would find in a small Canadian town, but the prices here reflect a big city establishment. Located downtown in a diverse city, I expected more variety in their sushi combos than just basic salmon and tuna options. For $67, you will receive about 3x6 rolls, 4 sashimi pieces, and 4 nigiri pieces. The sashimi and nigiri were cut very thick, thicker than I have experienced before. The salmon was decent, although a bit fatty, while the tuna was tough. For the price, I expected better quality tuna. We also ordered gyoza and beef tataki, which were both average. The portion size for the tataki was small. Overall, I probably would not return to this restaurant. This was my second visit and the quality has decreased while the prices have increased since my last visit in the summer. The affordability of this place was once a draw, but that is no longer the case. There are definitely better sushi options in Ottawa for a similar price.
