What Magali Burri dislikes about Satluj:
there is not too much to say about the restaurant: the dishes are ok, but not 1. class, service is fast, but not remarkable, prices are fair. when they are around and hungry it is not the bad choice, but if they are special for something. they go somewhere else. View all feedback.
Bland is the best description I can give. I have a basic rule of not going to ethnic restaurants in Europe. Maybe because they seem to adapt to local tastes I find their food most often unimpressive. Once in a while I crave for it...though and I give it. Unfortunately this was one more of the same old, same old experience. We had duck saag, I normally like lamb but my friend does not like lamb. I also asked the waiter whether the lamb was mutton (old) or young. He confirmed that it was a large animal so I also decided against the lamb. The saag had not real flavour (the duck was tasty). The other selection was a chicken korma. Also unimpressive with no real depth of taste and chicken pieces that I found too dry. Naan bread with garlic was good and we enjoyed this. Service was correct and reasonably fast. Price is also reasonable.
The food is very tasty, the cooks and waiters are indians and this makes the satluj restaurant an authentic indian restaurant. if you look for a dinner and have a taste of India, satluj is the place to go. We've came here several times and...everytime we enjoyed it.
I love Indian food, in spite of never having been to India, so my reference is UK Indian food and what I cook at home following Madhur Jaffrey cookbooks. So far my experience of Indian restaurant in Munich has been disappointing and although Satluj cannot...aspire to be classified as top caterer the overall quality is not too bad. I have been there three times so far. Naans are very good although I had a Peshwari Naan this time which had too much sweet stuff on it. Candied cherries!? and honey as well as the usual almond/pistachios. Weird but good, not sure how authentic though. Samosas were very nice but onion bhaji were actually not. like onion rings than proper bhajis. As usual I had a vegetarian thali (mixed vegetarian curries brought together with a good cucumber raita) which was not disappointing. The lentil/mung bean dhal was very nice and the Southern Indian curry with coconut was good. My husband had a passable duck vindaloo (too much tomato sauce as it often happens in Indian restaurants) and my mother had a very nice duck Jalfrezi. The rice was not very nice, seemed old, it is not the first time I had this feeling in Satluj. We did not have desserts this time. My salty lassi (yoghurt drink) was excellent. Service appears to be variable. The first two times we were there the waiter was very helpful, this last time he was quite rude and pretended not to understand that I just wanted a simple glass of tap water. A woman from a neighbouring table had to come to my rescue...
