Was Lois Gleichner at Athens Cafe a mag?
Athens Cafe serves generous, flavorful gyros that are a real treat. Their hummus is outstanding and pairs perfectly with their homemade pita chips, which you can also buy to enjoy at home throughout the week. It's definitely worth a visit. The interior has a casual deli vibe, so it's not ideal for a romantic date, but it's great for takeout or a casual meal with a small group. View all feedback.
What Estel Gerlach dislikes about Athens Cafe:
At Athens Cafe, the service and prices were excellent. However, the baklava was dry and stale, the chicken was a complete disappointment, and both the gyro and tzatziki sauce were quite forgettable. Additionally, the pita bread was served cold. The overall menu showed promise but fell short in execution. View all feedback.
All around solid restaurant for Mediterranean cuisine. The flavor and bang for buck factor here are hard to beat, but that doesn?t mean there isn?t room for improvement. The staff were friendly but the interior atmosphere was a bit dingy and outdated. The falafel were crispy and delicious, though lacked flavor compared to other falafel I?ve had. The hummus was rich and satisfying but a bit too runny. The star of the show was the Athena chicken, which was well-marinated, grilled to have a slight char, and very tender, juicy, and flavorful especially alongside the sautéed onions and banana peppers. The portion was enough for a full lunch and leftovers for dinner. The pecan pastry was also a standout item, notable for how sweet, flaky, and buttery it was. The chocolate almond roll was a bit dry, as if it had been out too long. Overall I think 4 stars for this place is very fair; I?ve had better, but I did not regret eating here. Some items were just okay, others were great.
The salad was amazing and so were the crispy falafels. However their chicken and lamb plates were not good. The chicken was over cooked, hard and dry enough to leave a dent on the tab if thrown! But the hummus was good. Would go again only for appetizers. And not for main course. Also the desserts weren?t as good. They were way too sweet for even a bite.
We've been coming to Athens for years. Covid shut everything down for awhile, and we hadn't been there. Today was a real treat.
The lamb and chicken are killer. They have always had a good bargain for there deals. Throw something in the tip jar after you order.
