Nestled in downtown San Jose, Mudai Restaurant is a hidden gem that celebrates Ethiopian cuisine with generous portions and vibrant flavors. Diners rave about dishes such as Beg Alicha Wot, a tender lamb stew, and a variety of meat and vegetarian combos served with authentic injera made from 100% teff flour, perfect for gluten-free diets. The warm ambiance, friendly service, and unique offerings like honey wine and shrimp distinguish it from typical eateries. With a focus on fresh ingredients and delightful spices, Mudai provides a comforting experience that resonates with comfort food lovers looking for something special.

As for the restaurant itself, it’s one of my favorite spots in the Bay Area. It’s very affordable (the vegetable combo is an incredible deal), the food quality is excellent, and the staff is always friendly and eager to help, even if they aren’t the quickest with things like refills. While their competitor, Zeni, located on the Saratoga/Santa Clara border, might have a more authentic vibe with traditional woven tables and seating, I prefer Mudai by a long shot. Recommendations: definitely try the vegetable combo, where you can choose four out of five items, all of which are fantastic. Almost anything with lamb is a winner as well. And don’t miss the ginger tea—it packs a punch (which is great if you’re a ginger lover like me). This place is excellent for vegetarians and lamb enthusiasts alike. If you’re planning an outing with vegetarian friends from India, I highly recommend it. Most of the Indians I know haven’t tried Ethiopian food, so it can be a unique shared experience. Just a heads up: because of the eating style, things can get a bit messy, so maybe save this for after the first date!

Food: 4/5 Service: 1/5 We ended up staying until closing because the service was incredibly slow. It took us three hours to leave the restaurant. I don’t believe the staff intended to be so poor in their service; they just don’t seem like typical restaurant employees. They were very kind people, but if I return, I’d probably order takeout. They couldn’t keep track of our individual orders, so we had to split the bill evenly. The food was decent, and it was my first time trying Ethiopian cuisine. I wish the restaurant all the best, but I hope they improve their service.

My first experience with Ethiopian cuisine at Mudai Ethiopian exceeded my expectations. The menu offers a savory selection, and the meat combo is a must-try—each meat was flavorful and expertly cooked. The salad was rich and perfectly prepared.
