Was john c at Self Preservation a mag?
Popped in for a quick coffee and toast and we found that it was quite good. Good customer service and a very pleasent interior environment as well as outside tables if you prefer. We will go back if in the area, View all feedback.
What Dennis M dislikes about Self Preservation:
Popped in here after lunch, and it was OK nothing memorable. They served an avocado and (something else) cake which was surprisingly tasty. Nice touch having jewellery hanging around the cafe that is available for purchase. Coffee was OK, not great, service was far from memorable and we were given 0 interaction. We popped in here as Pelligrini's was full. View all feedback.
Coffees, elegant continental-style cakes and a light seasonal-fruit breakfast. Pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff, lovely coffees.A busy venue with lots of regular patrons on a Saturday morning. Welcoming and warm. Would go here again. Separate tables and a large central bench with high stools. Wine bar. Newspapers. Pencil sketches and a small selection of jewellery for sale.Water provided on central stand.
Great coffee! But it is Melbourne remember! Great little cafe serving decent cafe style breakfasts and lunches plus nice wine on offer. Welcoming and pleasant staff. Large communal central table with bar stools plus other individual tables to the rear. Service was attentive and food arrived promptly. Artwork and jewelry also for sale. Open 7.30am M-F and 8.00an Sat and Sun until 11pm. Takeaway items also available. Good vibe.
We recently had a family breakfast at Self Preservation and were very underwhelmed. The staff and environment were pleasant enough however, it was clearly run by foreign workers with no owner present as there was an air of disconnection and a seeming lack of care. The meals were very small with hefty prices that are unjustified. My avocado based breakfast was cold as though straight from the fridge, including the toast. My daughter had a porridge the other two had toast only and the bill came to $70!! There is a lot of competition in the breakfast market, many nearby, and Self Preservation really doesn't cut it.The coffee was ok. Ambiance was ok but also cold. Semi pornographic sketches on the walls right in our faces were distasteful. Will not be back.
This cafe is generally packed with the Melbourne arts scene and business crowd. It has a more European feel dark panelling, small circular outside tables on the street, French patisserie in the window. The coffee is good and usually very strong. The service can be patchy but I do like this place for its atmosphere. Authentic Melbourne.
