At first glance, this restaurant may seem small and unremarkable, but the food is absolutely amazing! I ordered a classic Philly cheesesteak topped with cheese whiz and sautéed peppers, while my husband opted for a cheesesteak with onions, peppers, provolone, and mayo, accompanied by a side of fried mushrooms. Everything we tried was delicious, and the service was exceptional. I was dealing with a cough, and the owne... View all feedback.
Since it was one of the first nicer days of Spring (grey and high 60's), my husband and I decided to take a drive on his lunch break and pick up some lunch on the drive. I mentioned Wendy's and found one out in Maynard. My husband checked Yelp for Maynard and Willy's sounded like a much more fun plan. We made the 40 minute drive and easily found parking out front. Cheese steaks are 2 sizes although the large is only a dollar more. It doesn't matter which additions you add to the basic cheese steak, all are the same price. This really simplified the ordering process. It was about 1:00 and it was still pretty busy. The one super nice man behind the counter took our order and it took around 15 minutes until we got our sandwiches. We didn't mind because he was so pleasant and the place was cute. The cheese steaks were probably the best ones we have had outside of Philadelphia. The roll was light and didn't overwhelm the meat. My husband was excited to see cheese whiz as a choice and I got the provolone. I also got mushrooms which SO delicious that I wished there had been a few more. Next time I'll ask for extra mushrooms! As an aside, I saw that he has a Pearl Black Pastrami sandwich on the menu. I didn't try it but that is probably the best pastrami in the area and tastes like the NYC deli pastrami. I'm coming back but it is going to be hard choosing between the cheese steak and the pastrami sandwich.
The food is fantastic and the owners are always working on keeping the options fresh. Very much what the heart of any downtown needs a good non chain sub shop with owners who are hands on, community focused, and friendly.
This place is a hidden gem. I never would have ventured here if not for a kids bday party nearby. While my daughter attended the party, my son and I came here for lunch. I ordered something for us to split: a large cheesesteak with provolone. And accepted a side order of fries for only an additional $1. For drinks, there's a case of canned soda, bottled water, and Gatorade to choose from. Our food was ordered at the counter and delivered to our seats. The meal was cut in half and served to us on two plates. I was pleasantly surprised with my first bite. The cheese had melted to perfection, the steak was thin (as it should be), juicy, and flavorful. The roll was soft with a light crisp; it was toasted to perfection and the perfect balance of meat to bread ratio. The fries were great too. Crinkle fries with season and served with a little ramekin of ketchup. Best lunch I've had in a while!
Best bang for your buck around! They'll make any sandwich creation you can come up with.
The best sub shop in Maynard and the surrounding area. They roast their own meats and are very generous with the portions. My favorites are The Hulk and their roast beef on a bulky roll. Add fries for a buck!
