Description

Tucked away in a rural Huntsville-area spot, this long-standing hole-in-the-wall is prized for its exceptional hush puppies and fried catfish, generous portions, and friendly staff. Rustic, well-worn decor hints at its history. BBQ is serviceable but can be dry with a thin vinegar sauce; fries and sides are uneven. Large sweet tea and good value are highlights. Service and food temperature may suffer when understaffed, and parking is limited for truck drivers, yet many patrons return for the fried specialties.

This review is a bit mixed. Unfortunately, I've never had good experiences with the BBQ here; it’s usually cold, overcooked, and mostly dry. But on the bright side, the Hush Puppies and Catfish are fantastic — truly the best in the Tennessee Valley! That’s why we keep returning: for those delicious Hush Puppies and Catfish!

Good restaurant and worth the drive. I have lived in Huntsville for the better part of my life and the Old Greenbrier has been on my list of favorites for years. I tried the New Greenbrier a couple of times and it just wasn 't my cup of tea. The servers (at the new Greenbrier) are impatient and pretty much rude and the cashier has no personality at all. The food generally arrived okay, but nothing exceptional. The Old Greenbrier is pretty much 180 degrees the opposite of the 'New ' Greenbrier. The staff are welcoming, but not in your face, and the food is quite good for the area. If you are not accustomed to pulled pork it is a bit of a change from the sliced BBQ you might be accustomed to if you are from the middle of the state, but is quite good. I must admit that the 'Old ' Greenbrier was hit and miss there for a year or so, but they seem to be back and going again. The prices for BBQ have become quite high because of the fad of BBQ now, so the plates that once cost $6.50 are now $10.00 and the $1 tea is around $2, so with tip you are going to be paying around $15 for an adult. Sure the Old Greenbrier is an old building, but it is clean and orderly. If you want an idea of what family dining was in the '50s and '60s make the drive and give the Old Greenbrier a try. I drive by at least a half a dozen BBQ places on my way there and that in itself tells you something.

I enjoy the catfish and hush puppies more than anything here.

I have been stopping by here for over 35 years and it hasn't changed. Great food, great service.

The best hushpuppies around. Love their fish and chicken fingers.
