Chen's presents an inviting atmosphere adorned with impressive décor, yet opinions on the dining experience vary widely. While some patrons laud the restaurant for its fresh, flavorful dishes and excellent service—highlighting the helpfulness of waitstaff and the variety on the menu—others express disappointment over quality inconsistencies and poor service. Dishes like sweet and sour chicken and crispy sesame chicken are criticized for lacking flavor, while fried rice and egg rolls have been described as inedible. Ultimately, Chen's remains a local staple with dedicated fans and discerning critics alike, reflecting the highs and lows of dining out.
My wife and I go to Long Beach every October for a 3 day vacation, and after several years of driving by we decided to stop for dinner at Chen's. I was somewhat skeptical of Chinese food in a sea side tourist town but I was pleasantly surprised, the BBQ pork was tender and delicious, the egg rolls were huge and stuffed with pork and cabbage, the hot and sour soup was excellent, we also enjoyed the pork fried rice, the sweet and sour pork, the kung Pao chicken, and my wife's mai tai was extremely stiff and flavorful. Highly recommended dinner stop.
Probably the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had but large portions and very good price. So if all you care about is quantity per dollar then this is a good option. Staff and atmosphere were nice too. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $30–50 Food: 1 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
The food was great and service. Went the day before, and they were closed. Nice traditional Chinese food with great decor inside. We had a bit of everything from a few combination plates. My favorite was the pork fried rice and sweet sour chicken. Egg flower soup was also very good. Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $10–20
Its redeeming quality was that it was open when other options were closed. Not very good and very Americanized. We listened to traditional Chinese music on a broken/crackling speaker the entire meal. The whole restaurant had to have heard it but no one turned it off. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $10–20 Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 2
