While the extensive wine selection impresses enthusiasts, service can be inconsistent, often slow amidst a distracted staff. The menu features predominantly plant-based dishes, with some standout items like beef koftas. However, prices can feel steep, especially for sharing platters and small snacks. Guests appreciate the cozy decor and the seasonal offerings, though the rustic charm occasionally veers toward a tired aesthetic. Overall, it’s a worthy visit for wine aficionados and those enjoying light fare, despite some areas needing improvement.
I had a wonderful second visit to this lively and welcoming bar with fantastic wine and food. I feel fortunate to have this gem nearby.
I decided to get takeout from 161 on a Saturday night. It cost £27 for one person, which may seem a bit expensive, but I received a delicious main dish (spiced walnut stuffed roasted aubergine with kale, bulgur wheat, pomegranate and pickle) and a dessert of spiced cake and cream that was large enough to last me 3 nights! In addition, I was able to select a lovely bottle of wine. Overall, it was a special treat from a charming restaurant and wine bar that I highly recommend!
We recently visited this restaurant for the first time and immediately fell in love with the cozy atmosphere. We were warmly welcomed, but noticed that the service was a bit slow when there were only 6 people in the restaurant. The staff seemed easily distracted and disorganized. The drink options for non-wine drinkers were limited, as I had to go next door to buy my own lemonade for my vodka. The wine selection pleased our wine-loving friends. The food was mostly plant-based and tasty, although we found the sharing platter to be overpriced at £12. The beef koftas were a standout dish, while the sausage rolls had a unique samosa-like filling and were quite spicy and pricey at £4 each. Overall, it was a good experience for wine enthusiasts, but could be expensive for those looking to eat a full meal.
We moved to Sydenham 3 years ago and I can honestly say 161 and team have whole heartedly made the area a pleasure to live in. We absolutely love it! They have done a fantastic job at delivering amazing wine, food (beer) and service. We’d be lost without you. Please don’t ever change! An absolute gem in south East London
We moved to the area this year and this is our favourite local place. The owners are so friendly, welcoming and always happy to offer advice on different wines and what you might like. We've been to a few wine tastings here which have been brilliant, they are always relaxed and fun. The food is incredible and the atmosphere is warm and cosy.
