The food at Himalayan keeps getting better and better, which explains why it’s so hard to get a table during the summer season! I have to disagree with Yasmin’s review—who must work for Spice India if she claims it’s better. I had a poor experience at Spice India: I ordered Mushroom Rice, and it was just boiled rice with mushrooms on top. They also relied on simply chopping chillies to add heat to the main dishes, which felt like lazy cooking, along with excessive use of ghee. The Korma there was that bright yellow shade you could probably see from space! In contrast, Himalayan offers a perfect fusion of sauces—none of that unnaturally bright yellow korma—excellent sizzlers, great starters, friendly service, and above all, authentic Indian décor. It’s interesting that the best Indian restaurants in the UK and Ireland feature the traditional curry house style with a homely feel, much better than the modern Indian restaurants with uncomfortable chairs and arty pictures. Check out Himalayan’s menu and see for yourself—you might even spot a few familiar faces, as I did!

The staff at Himalayan were very friendly and accommodating, even on a busy Friday night when we hadn’t made a reservation. The service was excellent and attentive without being intrusive, which to me is a hallmark of a great restaurant. We started with complimentary poppadoms and dips, which was a lovely touch. The main courses were bursting with flavor and absolutely delicious. My wife enjoyed the Rogan Josh chicken with boiled rice, while I had the Ginger Prawn—stir-fried prawns with mushrooms, onion, carrot, spring onion, and ginger in soy sauce, served with pilau rice. To finish, we had a selection of ice creams. Alongside a glass of Coke and a house red wine, our total bill was €47. We highly recommend Himalayan and look forward to returning when we’re next in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The ambiance at Himalayan is pleasant, and the food arrived piping hot. However, our prawn puri starters were overly salty and seemed to use lower quality ingredients. The chicken tikka masala was pale and dominated by coconut flavor, making it more like a pasanda than a true masala. The server was very polite and helpful, and overall, we would be willing to return for another try. The wine is excellent value, and the naan was light and fluffy.

Amazing aromas and tastes. The lamb meat starter is plentiful and fulfilling. I had the traditional Himilian lamb curry, pilau rice and garlic and coriander nan. Exquisite!
