Have lunch with our little ones here, advising the eyes closed. So the boss warns, no 'menu child' type steak fries, instead of succulent boards, or salad or tartines to share. It's simple, but when the products (charcuterie and cheese are the honor) are of quality and well prepared, it works wonderfully Special mention to local wines tasted, delicious.
We stopped for snack lunch at this friendly looking cafeteria, which turned out not bad, and we expected to pay just for what we had ordered, which was two dishes, but in the end the bill was like for a good diner, we were charged for every extra. I am not saying it was wrong, I just worn the fellow budget travellers.
Warm, friendly owner who speaks excellent English if required. The menu is small but a lovely alternative to typical Perigourdine food (not as heavy) and the sturgeon on toast with horseradish is world class. Plenty of parking nearby and a small terrace if you like to eat outside. Recommend booking for parties larger than four as it's a fairly compact place and importantly it's popular with the locals (including the Mayor) as well as the tourists which is nearly always a good sign. Great wines, many of which are regional but no typical beer or spirits last time I checked it's not a wine bar though so if you're after pub grub there are alternatives in Le Bugue. Highly recommended.
We were welcomed politely by the jovial, lively owner, who took pride in everything she did. We had the menu, offered in French or English and of mostly regional fare, explained to us, and the specials board, before leaving us to decide. After we had chosen she confirmed what we had ordered. She had a good working knowledge of English not a computer translation! She then suggested which wines would go with what we had ordered. The courses we chose were excellent and very good value, as was the wine. For dessert we chose rum baba, which didn't go short on the rum! It was noticeable that she greeted and gave attention to each couple who arrived. there was a great atmosphere in the room. The place is neither large nor small. inside there are about 4 low tables with dining room sized chairs and there are 5 high tables with bar type chairs. Outside there are another 4 tables, so plenty of choice. We would definitely return here again when we are in the region. Don't go though if you expect piles of chips, coke and burgers it isn't that type of place.
The nice lady that runs the place is trying to do something different from the standard southwest fare while keeping a local flavour. There's a good choice of wine and light meals with high quality ingredients. A cheap set menu would be a good idea as a simple lunch worked out pretty expensive for the region.
