Out of the blue, we find ourselves in an unexpected situation. Just 36 hours before the latest lockdown, our long-term financial partners made the sudden decision to terminate our management relationship with Effra Social, effective immediately. Consequently, Portobello Brewing will be stepping in, and you may notice some changes when you visit us post-lockdown. This move came as a surprise—untimely and unwarranted, we believe—especially after an 11-year relationship. As with any breakup, it's usually one party that gets blindsided. Rest assured, we are committed to returning these pubs to the Antic Collective as soon as possible. Effra Social and its like were born from our vision long before any funding was involved, and their unique character reflects the eclectic spirit we cherish. We know that a pub represents far more than mere financial investment; it’s a communal heart for the locals, which we have nurtured for over 21 years. So, let there be no doubt—we will not fade quietly into the background as the pandemic lingers. Some things are simply too important to let go. We are genuinely sorry that the Antic team won’t be welcoming you back on December 2nd at The Effra Social, but we urge you to continue supporting this vital local establishment. The pub is far more significant than the behind-the-scenes negotiations, and our wonderful staff, many of whom you know, will be excited to see you. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us through the Bosses Ear on the Antic London site if you have any feedback regarding these changes or the Portobello style of operation. We want to address any concerns you might have when we return, as we believe in proactive communication. This year has been filled with surprises, and while this particular situation certainly took the cake, we will use it to navigate our way back to the pubs we love. Nestled in Brixton, Effra Social captivates with its lively atmosphere, attracting diverse crowds for live music and hearty Caribbean cuisine. Guests enjoy a cozy indoor space adorned with quirky decor and a charming outdoor area. The venue offers a tempting array of drinks, including potent Jamaican rums and a rare tap of Red Stripe. While the food can sometimes miss the mark, the attentive staff consistently enhance the experience. With engaging events like quizzes and dance parties, Effra Social remains a beloved local hangout, welcoming all who seek good company and vibrant energy.
FOOD: We had roast beef and cheesecake. The roast beef was very fatty, and where there was meat it was gelatinous, chewy, and difficult to cut (particularly with the poor quality knives supplied), so that we left more than we ate despite being hungry. I now remember it was like this over a year ago, so that 's not likely to change. The 'cheesecake ' served in little enamel dishes, was in fact some diminutive cheap-tasting biscuit-like substance with a cheesecake-like-substance piped on top in rosettes. SERVICE: Our aperitifs arrived minutes before our mains; our mains were served without a wine order being taken; our mains plates were left on the table for more than 30 minutes, obliging us to remove them ourselves; and our wine arrived with our puddings an hour after our mains. The staff were pleasant enough, just too inexperienced and stretched.
I booked the private second room (the Churchill Room) for my birthday celebration for 50 people and it was absolutely perfect! We had our own bartender for the evening with a decent array of drinks, we could play our own music that went to a suitable volume for the number of people present, and the room was a great size and really nicely furnished. Can’t comment on the food as we didn’t eat, but based on my limited previous experience of this venue the food is really good. Would recommend this place to anyone who is planning a private party!
I would rate the pork belly small bites a perfect 10 out of 10. I will absolutely return to this restaurant. The food has improved significantly compared to a few years ago.
I had a fantastic time at the Quiz Night on a Tuesday at Effra Social. The atmosphere was lively and the quiz host was entertaining. I will definitely return to try the food next time.
We reserved the private room for our 20-person team Christmas party and were impressed by the attentive staff, delicious and timely food, and affordable pricing. A big thank you to Effra for a great experience!
