What denisej94 doesn't like about The Anchor And Hope:
The food was good, the service was okay, but the prices have become extremely expensive. I have been a regular customer for years, but I'm not sure if I will be returning anytime soon. The Sunday lunch lamb was priced at £37 per person, which I believe is overpriced. View all feedback.

The food was good, but the wine was expensive and the service was terrible. We were asked to leave the table after waiting a long time for both service and our food. The prices were high for what felt like pub-style food and service.
First time here and it was absolutely rammed on a Wednesday night. Very loud and crowded. We were unfortunately sat at the worst table in the place. Waiting staff bumping into me everytime they squeezed between the bar and my table to get to other tables. Within ten minutes of sitting down we were asked at least 7 times if we were ready to order. I thought they were trying to turn the tables around (turns out they weren't) so this immediately rubbed me the wrong way. They continue to hover around the whole time. Its quite bizarre and un-nerving and the wrong side of attentive. Also letting in large groups of drunken men to stand at the bar inches from people trying to enjoy a meal just doesn't seem right either. I saw a couple nearby trying to have a romantic meal and there was little chance of that. The superior room next door near the kitchen looked much better though if you are going I'd ask to sit in there as I'm sure that's a much better experience. Food was very tasty although not hugely generous. Grouse lasagne is divine. How about a bit of bread with it or something rather than just a tiny salad? Luckily I was able to steal some of my friends chips.. Wine list is just bizarre with a £30 Beaujolais being sold for £125. Had a decent Cotes du rhone though. I think they need to decide whether they are 100% sitting and dining OR make some more room at the bar and have less tables. As it is its just too busy. Still they must be doing something right for it to be this packed.
Over the last 14 years we have been coming here and it’s consistently **** amazing. The food is great value and dam yummy
Had a really, really super al fresco pre-cinema dinner here. Service was friendly, helpful and efficient. Food was excellent . I couldn’t fault my grilled Dover sole with lobster beurre blanc and creamed spinach- fish expertly cooked and the whole dish marrying perfectly. We’d preceded this with bread and olives and I have to say that the sourdough bread was superb. It was a quick dinner because we were attending a show and that was the reason for our declining starters and desserts, but I’ll make certain to return and address that issue. It’s a great place.
