My 1st visit to Before9 was unforgettable, the staff was knowledgeable friendly, the menu, although limited, had good choice to pair with the beers, the well chosen luck for me were my favorite craft beer in Japan, Neko-nihiki two cats from the Isekadoya brewery. Would I visit 9 again? Absolutely yes! View all feedback.
What User doesn't like about Before9:
Good beers, food okay. Very rude and unfriendly female owner, who makes her staff work as if they were slaves, cleaning up her place top to bottom, and who addresses us as if we were idiots. Nice place, friendly customers, but super bad vibes coming from the owner. View all feedback.

Living in North Kyoto, Before 9 is one of the best local spots around. A refurbished Machiya, the interior is peaceful and cozy with a minimalistic look. They have 8 or so beers each night, always a great selection, and priced at market value for craft beer here in Japan. The food is excellent and reasonsobaly priced. Standing room downstairs and tables upstairs to fit a small party. This is not a rowdy place and not the best place to meet new people, better for a delicious beer or sake and a relaxing chat with friends. The staff are friendly and gracious and take good care of their locals and new customers.
Prices are a bit expensive for example for the pizza (really small, diameter less than a plate), but good quality of food and beers! Highly recommend the lamb gyozas!
If you are in craft beers and samurai, you need to take a look at this place. This small joint is just a few steps from a metro station. They pay front and choose from their wide selection of craft beer. Service was very good, and it politely helped us choose beers that fit our taste. On the second floor you can enjoy the balcony while watching an old samurai movie. All in this place has a great atmosphere and good mood!
The food was great as well as the beer and the employees. Its a bit out of the way but there are other craft beer places in the area. Also you pay upfront when you order not at as you leave.
