It's basic enough to know that if a customer signals that they want to pay, you don't stick a hand in their face to tell them to shut up. While the waiter in question was getting orders from a medium sized group, we had been waiting for 10 minutes already and chose our opportunity to make the "we'd like to pay" signal so as not to intrude.
